Best Free Co-Op Games On Steam

Updated on May 16, 2026, by Mark Sammut: A new May 2026 game has been added as a recommendation. I’ve also updated the intro to be more relevant.

Steam has F2P co-op games, but you have to go look for them. Except for some well-known releases like No More Room in Hell, One-Armed Robber, and We Were Here, most of the store’s cooperative freebies are smaller indie titles that might not have much of a presence. Considering how expensive gaming has become, free-to-play games are nowadays more valuable than ever, and you don’t need to leave Steam and jump into Neverness to Everness to find something to play with friends (and NTE‘s multiplayer is pretty limited anyway).

While I can’t promise to unearth every hidden gem lurking deep within Steam’s endless library, I can provide some guidance on the best places to start. In the name of variety, the article will also cover a wide assortment of genres, recommending horror, shooters, platforms, beat ’em ups, and (hopefully) everything else. Time to assemble your friends to play some of the best free co-op games on Steam!

Co-op games that focus exclusively on PvP will be largely ignored. Counter-Strike 2 and Rainbow Six Siege X are examples of omitted games, although modes like Wingman can satisfy players looking for PvP co-op. That said, we will include a few exceptions, especially new games that you might have missed.

Also, for online co-op games, we are going to avoid Steam games with low player counts that are either dead or dying.

New May 2026 Co-Op Game: Stitchlings

A Cute Little Co-Op Beat ‘Em Up

Honestly, 2026 hasn’t been a great year for Steam F2P co-op games, and that doesn’t really seem set to change anytime soon. However, as long as we look beyond big eye-catching titles, we can find a couple of indie gems fully deserving of your time, even if it is just for an hour or two. Spitchlings is one of these sorts of releases, and it might very well end up being May’s best release on Steam for this niche category. Focusing on 2-player local co-op, this game is specifically designed to be played with a friend, and single-player isn’t even supported. The core gameplay loop is relatively typical for an isometric beat ’em up, but Spitchlings‘ selling point comes from its customization system. Rather than finding loot, you take it from the leftover pieces of your enemies. Yeah, that is a pretty dark concept for such an adorable game, but it is also a perfect fit for the “arts and crafts” style it is going for.

Now, Spitchlings will probably not take you more than an hour to complete, and even that might be a bit on the long side. Still, it is fun while it lasts, and it will be cool to see where the developer, Studio Woolworks, goes after this. It doesn’t seem like updates are planned, but I cannot say that for sure. Maybe Spitchlings will be used as a proof of concept for a more substantial project? Anyway, grab a friend and play this.

We Were Here

Best Free Escape Room for 2 Players

Following the same thread as innovative puzzle co-op games like Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes, We Were Here sees two players lost in a frozen wasteland and separated. The only form of communication they have is through their handheld radio devices. Both players must have working microphones to communicate as they work together through challenging puzzles to reunite, and they will have a unique gameplay experience.

Best Co-Op Games On Steam To Play Right Now

From online multiplayer titles to local masterpieces, Steam has plenty of fantastic co-op games that should be played in 2026.

Seemingly inspired by real-life escape rooms, I was surprised at just how well We Were Here manages to replicate those experiences. The game proved to be a big enough success to produce four sequels, none of which are free. That said, they are all very good and are not that expensive when bought together.

Supermarket Together

Massive 16-Player Management and Cooperative “Broom” Justice

Since the tail-end of 2024, Supermarket Together has quietly existed as one of Steam’s best online co-op experiences, and it is genuinely free except for a cosmetic pack. As suggested by its title, this game should satisfy any player’s desire to create their own retail empire, specifically managing a grocery store. They can take on this responsibility alone and still have a good time, but bringing a few friends along is recommended.

Don’t let the relatively simplistic visuals fool you, Supermarket Together has a lot going on. Not only can players manage every aspect of the story (or dish out tedious jobs to employees), but they can also expand using Franchise Points. The game has a surprisingly good sense of progression, and new content is being added regularly. The February 24, 2026, update even introduced new manufacturing departments, adding a layer of industrial management to your neighborhood shop.

Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop

Best for Large Groups: Free 8-Player Tactical Action

Alien Swarm might just be Valve’s most forgotten game, although the 2010 release is by no means bad. In fact, anyone seeking a twin-stick co-op shooter can certainly do worse than this title; however, they should consider jumping into Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop instead of the original game. For one, Reactive Drop is still being updated despite coming out in 2017, which cannot be said for Alien Swarm. Secondly and more importantly, the expansion does exactly what it advertises: improve the base experience.

While not lacking PvP, Reactive Drop is primarily about co-op. 8 players can take on one of the game’s 10+ campaigns, each consisting of a couple of missions. Naturally, the gameplay loop boils down to players going up against wave after wave of enemies while they try to work toward a level’s endpoint. Straightforward as this concept is, Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop manages to incorporate quite a bit of nuance through its classes and tactics-driven gameplay. This is not one of those forgiving games that allow players to effectively disregard the rest of the team as they live out their Rambo fantasy; no, teamwork is necessary for survival.

Where Winds Meet

Best for: Massive Open-World Exploration and Wuxia Combat

What a timeline we live in that something as impressive as Where Winds Meet would be free-to-play. While it has been out in China for a while, Everstone’s open-world RPG is finally available internationally, and it covers a surprisingly wide net.

If you want to play Where Winds Meet as a single-player experience, you can do so without having to worry too much about interacting with the MMO features. If you are specifically looking to take your campaign online and join up with strangers, you can pick the Online Mode, which is its own thing that has unique dungeons and its own level system. Realistically, you will need to go back and forth between solo and online play, as you cannot do the former’s quests in the latter and vice versa. Finally, if you want to play with your friends, you can use co-op mode, with one person acting as the host while everyone else serves as the guest.

Where Winds Meet goes out of its way to be as accommodating as possible, and it manages to shine in nearly every area. The game is, ultimately, best played with a couple of friends, as this quickens the process of completing story missions (as co-op covers the same ground as Solo Mode).

Wuthering Waves

High-Skill Boss Hunting and Echo Farming for 3 Players

Wuthering Waves took quite a while to make its Steam debut, but the delay was worth it since the game is nowadays in a much better state. At launch, Kuro’s project garnered a notably mixed response, with the visuals and gameplay being considered decent but nothing too incredible. While the story is still not great, in my opinion, Wuthering Waves arguably offers the best combat in the gacha genre, along with pretty great traversal. Anybody craving a free-to-play open-world action RPG should give this a try, as they have nothing to lose but time.

Wuthering Waves: All Support Characters, Ranked

Here are the best support characters you should pay attention to in Wuthering Waves.

For its co-op, Wuthering Waves allows up to three players to share a world, with one of them acting as a host. They all control one playable character, and having some allies can be useful for taking out bosses (although the game is not really that difficult). Honestly, Wuthering Waves‘ co-op is not much of a selling point, especially since players need to reach Union Level 22 just to unlock it. That is a lot of time to invest for people specifically looking to play with friends.

Rec Room

A Limitless Sandbox with 12 Million+ Player-Created Worlds

Rec Room is somewhat of a special case as it is a social platform that lets you create your own games and play them with friends. VR is the best way to jump into this title, but it does not need the technology either; therefore, you can play it with just Steam and a halfway decent PC. People can create rooms to house their games, and they can vary wildly in terms of genre, tone, length, and so on.

Besides the many, many player-created projects, Rec Room also has original games created by the developers, and they are generally fun and also give you a good idea of what can be created on the platform. Stuff like Isle of Lost Skulls, Quest for the Golden Trophy, and The Curse of the Crimson Cauldron are good places to start.

Team Fortress 2

Timeless Class-Based Co-op for Low-End PCs and Steam Deck

Team Fortress 2 is primarily known for its PvP, which counts as co-op to an extent. If you and your friends are craving a competitive free game, Valve’s ongoing classic is one of the best options ever, and it seems set to continue until the end of time. The player count per team varies from mode to mode, and the highest is 12 members on each side.

Now, if you do not want PvP, Team Fortress 2 has a co-op mode called “Mann vs. Machine,” which comes in two forms. “Mann Up” is paid and requires having a Tour of Duty ticket in your backpack. As you always get rewards for completing missions in this mode, you need to pay to play. Alternatively, there is “Boot Camp,” which is completely free and has effectively the same content, sans rewards. Basically, if you are just looking to play a horde mode with your friends and don’t care about getting any unique weapons, just go with “Boot Camp” and have a blast. If you are specifically craving a weapon, then you will need to drop some cash for “Mann Up.”

“Mann vs. Machine” supports up to 6 players, and they go through wave after wave until they complete a mission and, eventually, a Tour of Duty. You can play as the same characters as in the competitive game, and you use credits to unlock upgrades throughout a run.

I have fond memories of playing “Mann vs. Machine” back in the mid-2010s after the mode was added to Team Fortress 2, but I have struggled to get into games over the last two years or so. I haven’t tried a million times by any means, but the matchmaking system can be frustrating.

With You

Best for: Couples and Intimate 2-Player Collaboration

With You is a wholesome cooperative puzzle-platformer game for two players to enjoy. Together, the couple must collaborate to solve a series of physics and platforming segments through problem-solving, gentle communication, and jumping on each other.

Short and sweet, with its intentionally wonky controls, With You resolves to improve the bonds and intimacy between the two players and (quite literally) bring them closer together. You will probably finish the game pretty quickly, but it is fun while it lasts.
