Borderlands 4 is already the third-best-selling game of the year in the United States

Borderlands 4 is a hit. Gearbox's latest (and well-received!) mainline entry isn't in danger of flopping, per se, but there's nuance to the game's sales potential, and it seems primed to fully realize its commercial ambitions.

Courtesy of Circana, the leading US gaming sales analytics firm, we now know that Borderlands 4's launch period kicked off with aplomb. For the period between August 31 and October 4 – which coincides with its September 12 debut – Borderlands 4 achieved the #1 sales position in the United States. Other winners include Yotei's Ghost, Silent Hill F, and Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles.

Third place in three weeks

In the Bluesky thread above, Circana analyst Mat Piscatela breaks it all down in his traditional slide-fueled and easy-to-read format. There's a lot to parse — including a very solid fourth-place debut for Ghost of Yotei, an equally strong seventh-place Silent Hill f Bow, and more — but to me the biggest splash in the gaming fandom mindshare will tie in with Borderlands 4's many achievements.

Coming in with a first-place finish for its launch month is great news, but when you zoom out and look for larger-scale sales impact, there's nothing like Circana's Top-20 Top-Taker of the Year to tell you which of 2025's heavy hitters really hit the hardest.

Borderlands 4 strikes me as the kind of title that will continue to sell for years to come, so a launch period that pins it in third place in the industry is all the more sizzling for it. NBA 2K26 and Monster Hunter Wilds are the only games above. We know Wilds had a truly spectacular launch of his own, even if its “legs” partially collapsed later.

Turning our attention back to the month of September (and the early days of October), I would argue that the other standouts of Circana are Yotei's Ghost and Silent Hill F. Indeed, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles finishing in ninth place is a well-deserved achievement. Consider it, however it carries its IP name important Final Fantasy as a name, brand is not where it used to be. So, factor in that this is a remaster, and a remaster of a niche subgenre at that.

The game ranked second on the Nintendo eShop, but did not place on PSN, indicating that in the US, a large portion of Ivalician consumers reached the Switch and Switch 2.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger, a game that left a much bigger impact on Steam than many anticipated, comes in at 13th place for the month. It started on October 2nd, meaning it was only three days of tracking, and… well, that's it Digimon. I don't think I'm alone in thinking that the reality that Time Stranger hasn't hit the top 20 exists. At least in the West this has been overplayed. Nice show, called Bandai.
