We've had Spotify Wrapped and all its copycats, but now, the ultimate 2024 retrospective is in: the AO3 charts. For those of you blissfully unaware, AO3 is a popular fanfiction site, often used to share work depicting two or more characters in a relationship.
The 2024 charts show us which of these relationships – or ships – were the most popular last year. A couple of video games have made the cut, although some of them may surprise you. Or not, if you're deep into the fandom mines.
AO3's Top Ships of 2024 Revealed
From Astarion/Tav to Soap/Ghost, who was getting it in 2024?
These statistics were compiled through fanfiction shared on AO3 in 2024. The chart itself was put together by the AO3 user center oftheselights, and the findings can be read here.
Many different media types are represented here, but for our purposes, let's dive into the video games that made the list. In 2024, the 17 most popular fanfiction relationships came from games:
-
Alhaitham and Kaveh from the Genshin effect.
-
Honkai: Aventurine from Star Rail and Dr. Ratio.
-
Soap and ghosts from Call of Duty.
-
Blade and Dan Heng from Honkai: Star Rail.
-
Gale and Taw from Baldur's Gate 3.
-
Astarion and Gale.
-
Astarion and the reader.
-
Kamishiro Rui and Tenma Tsukasa
-
Kamishiro Rui and Tenma Tsukasa from Project SEKAI: Colorful Stage.
-
The ghost and the reader.
-
Lucanis and Rook from Dragon Age: The Valeguard.
-
Ekko and Jinx from League of Legends.
-
Sonic and Shadow from Sonic the Hedgehog.
-
Tartaglia/Childe and Zhongli from Gensin influence.
From here, we can see that Baldur's Gate and League of Legends dominate the charts, each taking up several spots with different characters. However, in the case of League of Legends, the credit should go to the TV series Arcane, as it saw CaitVi and JayVik go to AO3.
The release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard also saw the series break into the top 100, maintaining a dedicated fanfiction writing community over the years. Sonic and Shadow also almost squeeze in at the end, a fitting end to the year of Shadow.
Alas, neither game managed to take the top spot overall, going 9-1-1 on American TV shows. Good luck this year?

Baldur's Gate 3 is the long-awaited next chapter in the Dungeons and Dragons-based series of RPGs. Developed by Divinity Creator Larian Studios, it puts you in the middle of Ferun's mind flayer attack more than a century after the events of its predecessor.
