Meito, alternatively known as Legendary Swords, Famous Blades, and similar nicknames, are, as each name implies, blades of particularly high prestige. Those well versed in blades will be able to recognize them immediately, and they command both high prices and high wielders. Meito are individually given “grades” based on their strength and quality.

a piece: 5 non-canon characters that make no sense
Although technically not all non-canon characters “make sense” in one piece, these individuals seem to be particularly contradicted by the main canon.
Great Grade Blades are the second-highest grade blades, just below the 12 Supreme Blades. Only 21 of these are in existence. The five currently known to viewers originate from the Wano country, known for its excellent craftsmen, and are currently in the possession of those with ties to the region. This list will document every great grade blade currently known.
6 Wado Ichimonji
One of Zoro's blades
- Current Owner: Roronoa Zoro
- Producer: Shimotsuki Kozaburo
Wado Ichimonji is a katana that Zoro has owned since his quest to become the world's strongest swordsman. It was previously run by his friend and training partner, Shimotsuki Kuina. Wado Ichimonji was made by his grandfather, Kouzaburo, who brought it with him from Wano. Settling in Eastern Blue, he helped found the eponymous village of Shimotsuki. Kouzaburo's legacy was later used by both his son, Koushiro, and granddaughter, Kuina.
Kuina and Zoro were Koshiro's best students, resulting in a close friendship and rivalry developing. In a serious battle, Kuina uses Wado Ichimonji and defeats Zoro for good with it. However, she celebrated little, as she worried that Koushiro's sexist beliefs meant that women could not be as skilled with a sword, especially as she approached puberty. Zoro reassures him that skill and determination are the only things that really matter, and the two friends swear to each other that one of them will become the strongest swordsman in the world.
After her sudden death at the age of eleven, Zoro requested the sword, so that he could fulfill his promise to Kuina. Koushiro allowed it, and it stayed with the swordsman. In a way, it's still technically a Shimotsuki legacy, since Zoro's grandmother, Furiko, was also a Shimotsuki. The Wado Ichimonji is notable enough that Tashigi was angry that a single pirate claimed ownership of it.
5 Ame no Habakiri
One of Odin's Blades
- Current owner: Kozuki Momonosuke (temporarily)
- Producer: Kozuki Sukiyaki
The Ame no Habakiri was one of Kozuki Oden's signature swords, used in his own variation of the two-sword style. The blade has a heavenly color scheme of white and gold. It shares its name with the legendary Japanese katana used by the Shinto god, Susanu, to slay the eight-headed serpent, Yamata no Orochi. This difference is possible because it was previously one of the two weapons that could damage Kaido in his dragon form.
The sword was specially forged by Oden's father, Kozuki Sukiyaki, who is a master craftsman. After his son's death, Sukiyaki somehow managed to regain Ame no Habakiri. Although Sukiyaki Momonosuke wants to carry on his legacy, he still does not see himself as worthy to wield his father's sword.
4 Enma
A monstrous Meito
- Current Owner: Roronoa Zoro
- Producer: Shimotsuki Kozaburo
Enma was Oden's other signature sword, sporting a dark purple and red color scheme, as a demonic counterpart to the more heavenly Ame no Habakiri. Like Wado Ichimonji, it was first created by Kouzaburou, and is currently owned by his distant relative, Zoro. Kouzaburo considered Nma superior to Wado Ichimonji.
While Ame no Habakiri was Momonosuke's birthright, Enma belonged to his younger sister Hiyori. However, Hiyori trades the blade to Zoro in exchange for Shusui.

One Piece: Every Zoan Devil Fruit with multiple models
A look at the Zoan Devil Fruits, especially the “models” and the different shapes they take.
Like Ame no Habakiri, Enma was one of the two blades that scarred Kaido many years ago, resulting in a distinctive “x” shaped scar on his chest. The blade can release its wielder's Armament Haki, thus gaining a fearsome reputation. Zoro's arms were weakened until he established control with the blade, and it clearly weakened the lesser swordsman's entire body. Zoro not only injured Kaido once again with Enma, but also used it to defeat the King, which is especially remarkable when one considers that he is of the resilient Lunarian species.
Sukiyaki alleges that if Zoro can transform Enma into a permanent black blade, it can increase a grade, potentially becoming a sword of the highest grade. A strange detail about Enma is that its size seems to have changed to accommodate the more normal sized Zoro, and the larger Odin. This anomaly is also shared with the Ame no Habakiri, but is more notable with the Enma, as it appears to be wielded specifically by two swordsmen of different sizes and proportional to either of them.
3 Nidai Kitetsu
A cursed sword
- Current owner: Kozuki Sukiyaki
- Manufacturer: Kotetsu
The Nidai Kitetsu is an allegedly cursed katana from the Kitetsu school, all of which are said to bring terrible death to their owners. It was built by Kotetsu, the ancestor of the Kozuki clan. His descendant, Kozuki Sukiyaki, is the current owner of the blade. Sandai Kitetsu, another Kitetsu Meito, is currently owned by Zoro, who discovers it in Lougetown and chooses to test its luck against Blade. Notably, the Sandai Kitetsu is Zoro's only sword currently in use that is lower than Great Grade, only a Grade Blade (Meito's lowest grade, of which there is an undetermined number.)
Kitetsu Meito seems to have dropped in grade recently made. Nidai Kitetsu, a blade made before the creation of Kotetsu, is of a lower grade than Shodai Kitetsu, but of a higher grade than the Sandai Kitetsu made by the surviving Sukiyaki. Sukiyaki gave the blade to Luffy, whose treatment of the weapon was heavily criticized by Zoro. Notably, Luffy throws the sword, instead of directly dueling people with it. It later came into the possession of Sukiyaki, as it was rediscovered in Udon by Kikunojo.
2 Shusui
A black blade
- Current Owner: Obscure, resting in the grave of Shimotsuki Ryuma
- Manufacturer: Unknown
Shusui was the signature sword of Shimotsuki Ryūma, a legendary samurai known as the “Sword Lord”, an ancestor of Roronoa Zoro, who bore a resemblance to his descendant. Ryuma specifically transformed the sword into a black blade, which was permanently combined with Ryuma's Arament Haki, significantly increasing its durability. Ryuma was buried with his sword, but it was confiscated along with his corpse when Geko Moriya ransacked the grave.
It later appears in the Thriller Bark alongside the reanimated body of its owner. Zoro waged war against his zombified ancestor, who eventually gifted Zoro with the blade. Zoro believed that his other blades would crack against it if the duel continued. Zoro became particularly adept at the blade when he was trained by Dracul Mihawk, himself the master of Yoru, another black blade.

These Devil Fruits are hindered by more than any possible weakness their users may have on themselves.
Shusui has particularly strong ties to the Wano country. Zoro had repeatedly stolen the weapon from him, or else had been asked to return it by those from the country. Onimaru stole the blade from Zoro, and returned it to Ryuma's grave. It is so valuable that Hiyori trades her own Blade Enma, formerly her father's, with Zoro to secure Shusui's place in the country.
1 Sixteen other great grade blades
Currently unclear
The status of these Meito, as well as if they will factor into the story, remains to be seen. Unlike the current five Great Grade Blades, other Meito Wano of this grade are least likely to have originated outside the country. That being said, this, along with all other details, is purely speculation at this time. What is notable is that there are a number of identified Meito of unclear grade, meaning that there is a possibility that other existing Great Grade blades may be seen but not currently identified as such.
