Every major game released in September 2026 to avoid the arrival of GTA 6

There were a few big takeaways from Tuesday's State of Play. However, one big realization after the dust settled, with so many games confirming their release dates, was how busy September suddenly became.

There is an elephant in the video game release room for the second half of 2026, and that elephant is GTA 6. It seems even more certain that Rockstar's blockbuster won't be delayed again, so as it stands, the weeks surrounding the November 19 release date are positively barren when it comes to video games. September, however, is now packed to the rafters.

It seems the game's status was the point of no return for many studios, as a cavalcade of games were confirmed to launch in September. Control Resonant was probably the biggest group, and one Remedy fans feared would push into 2027. That may still happen, but for now, the sequel is one of many games that will be here in September.

PlayStation State of Play, June 2026 announced everything

PlayStation has an hour-long State of Play lineup, and you can keep up with all the announcements here.

Silent Hill: Townfall, another game in the series that will be set outside of the usual Silent Hill setting, is confirmed to release this September – September 24. Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be here the day after, which is a bold movie, and Ace Combat 8: Wings of Thieves opens a few days after that on September 28.

Other games releasing that month include Dune: Awakening, The Blood of the Dawnwalker, Halloween: The Game, and the biggest September release of all, the console version of Marvel's Wolverine. That one was already confirmed to launch on September 15th before it was revealed again during the game's state, though it seems incredibly unlikely to buzz past that date now that pre-orders are live.

The September slate could be even more complete by the end of the week

On top of all that, there's still Summer Game Fest and Sunday's Xbox Showcase to come, not to mention the rumored Nintendo Direct next week, during which September release dates may also be confirmed. At what point, the question arises, at what point does a month become so crowded that trying to avoid breathing the same oxygen as GTA 6 is more detrimental to potential coverage and sales than simply biting the bullet and releasing a little closer to what could be the greatest video game of all time?

Phantom Blade Zero appears to be taking that approach as its release date has been pushed out of September, to late October. Even then, that's a full three weeks before GTA 6 gets here, so it should be fine. September is busy for now, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some of its games slip, and if the studios behind them don't want to risk launching those games too close to GTA 6, we could see them joining Fable whose release date has just been moved to early 2027.
