Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Switch 2 port planned, aiming to run better than remake

The Switch 2's library of games is a mixed bag. There are some great first-party offerings, but we're not seeing a great deal of third-party titles yet. In fact, one of them – the Alden Ring Port – has been delayed after performance issues came to light. Similarly, other games that are coming to the console will be ported long after their initial release, such as Borderlands 4, which does not yet have a Switch 2 release date.

However, Square Enix has given us a glimmer of hope in all of this with the upcoming port of its Final Fantasy 7 remake Intergrade. Previews have shown that it runs incredibly well on the system, even in handheld mode, hardly sacrificing on the game's visuals. Now, game director Naoki Hamaguchi tells us that we should expect the same level of quality from the port of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, whenever that might happen.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth 2 is coming to Switch, and the devs hope it will run even better than the remake

Speaking to VGC, Hamaguchi says that the team is working “very hard” to make sure that Rebirth also runs on Switch 2, and that the team's experience will help in their efforts to adapt it for PC and Steam decks.

“I think we've seen a similar kind of response there, where people say, wow, this is actually running on Steam Deck, it looks really good, it's a much higher quality than I thought Steam Deck could reach,” explains Hamaguchi. “Obviously, there's a bit of a difference in specs and capabilities between Steam Deck and Switch 2 and various other handheld game systems. But I think we were able to get such a good result there, and that helped us plan and understand how to move forward with the series.”

Overall, Hamaguchi says that Nintendo fans “don't have to worry at all” about the final port of Rebirth. “They'll get a version that's as satisfying and as high quality as the first game, if not higher,” he says.

Meanwhile, Switch 2 owners will be able to play Final Fantasy 7 Remake from January 22, 2026.
