Fun open-world games aren't hard to come by, but most fall into the respectable B+ tier. Perfectly good releases that entertain you for a good while but don't stick in the mind indefinitely. Well, let's change that, at least for some forgotten open-world games that deserve to sit at the absolute pinnacle of the genre. We don't talk about GTA or The Witcher 3 here.
What makes an S-Tier game? I'd say the main requirement is to provide a few staples like a well-defined, realized identity, stellar exploration and sensible world design. A game doesn't need to be great at everything, but rather what it's trying to be. Unfortunately, many factors conspire to determine whether a project is a hit or a flop, and these open-world games didn't have the right marketing or launch time to firmly write their names in history.
Prototype is the best open-world power fantasy of all time
An S-Tier Rampage

-
You become an OP monster who turns Manhattan into your personal stomping ground.
- does prototype hold? yes Don't get me wrong, it looks like a very 2009 PS3 title, but the gameplay will be endlessly satisfying.
Starting with my favorite, prototype The perfect game to throw in when you want to cut looseDuring the 2000s, developers fell in love with the idea of wanton destruction in the sandbox, producing such cult classics. Mercenary: Playground of Destruction, Red Faction: Guerrillasand The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. prototype Represents the pinnacle of its era of open-world games because it lets you fully embrace your inner storm.
Manhattan is not remotely prepared for Alex Mercer, an ordinary boy forced to become a biological weapon that eventually evolves into a natural disaster-level threat. Whether it's leaping a mile in the air, smashing buildings like a mix of Spider-Man and the Hulk, or morphing your weapons into weapons like Venom, Mercer feels unstoppable while still requiring enough skill to actually be unstoppable.
prototype It was unfortunate to come out after 2 weeks infamousAnother power-fantasy open-world game by a more famous developer. As a result, it immediately entered an uphill battle for attention, despite arguably surpassing Sucker Punch's game in many ways.
The fuel scale is still mind-boggling
S-Tier Ambition
-
A record-breaking post-apocalyptic world
- does the fuel hold? Yes, although its ambition and size are double-edged swords at this point. The barren world is impressive but also a little too empty.
In the year 2026, the fuel Still technically holds the record for the largest map in an open-world racer, an incredibly impressive feat considering we're talking about a 17-year-old game. Now, I use the word “technically” because Asobo Studios used a few tricks to render the 5,560+ square miles, including procedural generation to render things like vistas and sandstorms. Much of the world is pretty empty, explained in-universe by a post-apocalyptic setting caused by global warming.
When surpassed by more modern racing games, the fuel It's still a technical marvel and one of the most atmospheric releases in its genre, as well as the closest thing we'll ever get. Mad Max Racer. Asobo goes on to support Ubisoft in the production of the first two the crew Games, and you can definitely watch the fuelBoth have an effect.
the fuel was delisted from Steam in 2013, just 4 years after its debut, and the Xbox 360 version followed a few years later. It's not impossible to find physical copies, but the game's limited availability really hurts its legacy.
Gateway embraced immersion before any other open-world game
An S-tier London crime story

-
London in all its Guy Ritchie glory.
- does Gateway hold? even now, Gateway Still feels amazingly unique, and its story and presentation have aged like fine wine. The gameplay is more of an acquired taste, but it's still playable.
Grand Theft Auto 3 Wrote the blueprint for arcade-style open-world games, which were soon refined the suburbs and San Andreas. While Rockstar would eventually lean into realism, Gateway It was the first game to prioritize, Giving birth to a style of open-world design that will be perfected by the likes Kingdom Come: Redemption and Ghost of Tsushima.
Creating an authentic recreation of London that's still colorful, Team Soho ditched the HUD in favor of a cinematic presentation that used visual cues to give players all the information they needed. Although you can freely explore London after completing the main story, Gateway is a linear open-world game that cuts out most of the genre's fluff, allowing for tight and well-paced travel.
Gateway was labeled as a GTA A clone at the time, which made no sense. It was the antithesis of the Rockstar franchise.
Gateway It came out a few months later the suburbsWho should have been sentenced to death. However, the game was so good and unique that it was still successful; Then only to ruin this momentum with the most disappointing sequel of this era.
Gun was Red Dead Redemption before Red Dead Redemption
An S-tier open-world western

-
The first open-world Western masterpiece.
- does the gun hold? Yes!
forget it red dead revolver, the gun was the real forerunner Red Dead RedemptionAnd it has stood the test of time far better than Rockstar's PS2 Western. Neversoft released an ultra-violent homage to the spaghetti western that told a brilliant, gritty story elevated by Hollywood-level writing and an A-list cast. The More than two decades later, Gunplay continues to explodeAnd it also includes a near-quick-draw slowdown mechanic in execution RDRDead Eye than the version found in Red Dead Revolver.
Although the map is quite small by modern standards, the gun There are three well-defined areas that connect seamlessly, ensuring very little space or wasted time between missions. The campaign isn't long by any stretch of the imagination, but it's about average length for its era, and you can extend it with some side activities and mini-games. Also, an excellent 10 hours is always superior to a decent 20 hours.
Naruto: Broken Bond is the GOAT anime open-world game
S-Tier customization

-
The most complete hidden leaf village in gaming.
- does Naruto: A broken bond hold? Absolutely!
Once upon a time, Bandai Namco didn't own every single shonen anime license, and we occasionally get games from the likes of Ubisoft. Yes, the most polarizing publisher in history released two Naruto titles on the Xbox 360, both of which predictably introduced an open-world concept. They are also incredible, ranking comfortably in the middle Narutocrowning achievements.
While Konohagakure serves as the main center of sightseeing, Naruto: A broken bondThe cell-shaded world of Ko extends beyond the Hidden Leaf Village, including locations such as Tanzaku Town and the Land of Tea. The game recreates these settings with incredible accuracy and designs them by taking advantage of traversal mechanics that highlight various equipment and character-specific jutsu. They feel more like giant puzzle-platforming stages rather than mere backdrops.
The combat system switches to a 2.5D perspective and plays like a basic fighting game, which isn't a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination.
