Astute God of War fans – or, indeed, any God of War fans – have probably noticed that I did not feature an image of a canceled live-service game as the cover photo for this article. I prefer not to cross any wires – I'll explain in a second. What is significant is that Bluepoint Games' canned project, which would have been a multiplayer entry, had a Greek setting.
We now know this beyond a shadow of a doubt, and we can all understand at least a little more. At least, it appears to be a good looking video game. Which stands to reason, I think, with how God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok proved. If visual cuts were being made here to support a more dynamic style, Bluepoint's conceptual stage did a good job of masking them. As far as early-stage screenshots go, we've seen pretty ugly.
Thanks to MP1st for this picture
See that gorgeous image? Make no mistake; That's from mp1st. Or, perhaps it's optimal to say it's from mp1st's source. Whoever that source may be, they gave mp1st a heck of a reveal package, and you should head over to the link I've provided to see them all.
I said, it is Definitely A Greek-as-Heck video game. At most, might it have explored Greek colonies throughout the Mediterranean and West Asia? But when people think of God of War, I think they think of pantheons before specific settings. Especially when the Houses of the Gods take first billing on that front, anyway.
Temples, caves, a room full of weapons of some sort – there's a lot to be had here. According to mp1st's source, Hades was in charge of that room, which is actually an armory. Presumably, the players had everything they needed to kick ass and take names, all thanks to Hades himself. mp1st also has a comparison picture called “The Curse” that shows an area afflicted – the area in one of the pictures I took, in fact – there is an accompanying image that shows the area in healthy shape.
What does it all mean? We can only speculate. The remaining time can be lost. Thankfully, it doesn't look like Sony is putting God of War on ice anytime soon. There's an Amazon TV series on the way, and modern Kratos VA (and Stargate SG-1 sensation) Christopher Judge wants another game (which hasn't been officially announced yet…) in Egypt.
There's also a Metroidvania-style God of War game on the way, or so some have claimed…
