Grand Theft Auto 6developer of Rockstar GamesIt has reportedly laid off 30-40 of its workers. The exact reason why the employees were fired is now being debated, with former Rockstar Games employees and Take-Two Interactive giving conflicting statements.
The game industry has had a tumultuous year, and it's not over yet. A few days before the news of this Rockstar game, Amazon announced that it would cut 14,000 positions at its company, while Microsoft has cut thousands of jobs over the course of the year. They are not the only two, however, it has become a widespread trend in the video game industry, and now Rockstar Games is adding to the list.
Rockstar Games lays off workers, but the reason is debated
News broke that Rockstar Games had laid off 30 to 40 employees at its offices in the UK and Canada on October 30. Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, said the firing was due to “heinous misconduct” and that Rockstar supported the decision to lay off the workers. However, that claim is being disputed by the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain, the IWGB. According to IWGB president Alex Marshall, all of the fired Rockstar Games workers were either part of a union or trying to organize, and also belonged to a trade union group on the Discord chat platform. Marshall said the firing was a “flagrant disregard for the law” and a “cruel and callous act of union busting.”
While Rockstar and Take-Two claim it's not about unions, this isn't the first time major developers and publishers in the industry have been accused of such things. Companies like Activision Blizzard and Nintendo have faced such allegations before, though some have been proven false. when Dragon Age: Vilguard In development, all QA testers belong to the working union Dragon Age removed They were the first Canadian sports industry association to exist exclusively.
Unfortunately, as to why these game developers were fired, they are far from the first of 2025, and probably won't be the last before the end of this year. Everything from a changing market to Covid-era overhiring has been blamed for recent firings, and one of the latest concerns for developers is the use of AI in game development. Many have speculated that AI could be used to take over some responsibilities and roles within game development studios as technology advances, potentially creating more jobs in 2026 and beyond.
