Soulslikes are an incredibly popular genre of game, and I want to get involved with them. They have great looking settings, epic bosses, and immersive storylines. Sadly, they also have difficulty with the ramp so I need an indispensable tool to lift it.
I want to be able to “get good” at the type of boss fights that require you to memorize a string of moves and execute moves with precise timing. Unfortunately, it won't happen. I have neither the memory nor the reflexes to achieve this, and believe me, I have tried many times. I actually need a story mode, so I can enjoy what these favorites have to offer.
Dark Souls Trilogy
Originator of genre and pain
You can't make a list of games like Souls that you want to play without including a trilogy that includes the genre's name. I want to perfect dragons, demons, demons, and other supernatural creatures. I am eager to learn about praising the sun, and I want to rekindle the first flame.
However, between me and these actions is a whole bunch of insanely difficult boss fights that I could spend months on and still not defeat. These games have tested the veterans of boss fights, and I'm just an infant.
Alden Ring
Dragons, and beasts, and monsters, oh my!
Elden Ring has a lot of things that I look for in a story. There are dragons, beasts, and monsters, as well as stories of rising gods, powerful artifacts, epic battles, and power struggles. I am amazed when I see the artwork. The settings are detailed and immersive, and the enemies are unique and very good looking. I want to face these monsters, but sadly it will never happen.
I know that Shadow Of The Erdtree could make this world more accessible, but I still don't fancy my chances without something that allows me to tune those boss fights down.
Sekiro: Shadows die twice
Die twice? Die two thousand more times
Sekiro's Japanese setting is quite stunning to behold and involves the story of a man who goes to desperate lengths to save his clan. Engaging combat and all-consuming conflicts tell stories that I want to hear. Unfortunately, my sword fighting skills are not up to par.
I'm fascinated by screenshots, but my lack of both spatial awareness and subtlety in real life is evident in games, too.
I have no chance of surviving a journey that requires stealth, skill and precision. I'm not made for this.
The lie of p
A fairy tale frenzy I will fail
As a big fan of twisted fairy tales, Lies Of P falls into my wheelhouse of stories I'm sure I'll love. It has sci-fi, horror, steampunk and a disturbing story of conspiracy, mysterious energy and robotics. I don't know how it all ties together but I want to know.
Sadly, the only frustration I've ever partake in is when I fail to make any sort of progress against the difficulty curve.
No code
A game that will suck the life out of me
A post-apocalyptic romp involving vampiric abilities, bloodshed, and unruly cannibals? Consider my attention drawn. Assassins, misuses, and fountains of blood? i'm in Adjust the difficulty level to play a Dark Souls-inspired game? I'm out.
Despite being able to play a female protagonist, which has always appealed to me because they mostly didn't exist when I first started the game, the phrase “Dark Souls inspired” is enough to make me run faster than I can say Revenants across mist-shrouded mountains.
blood borne
A blood-bath is more likely
This Victorian-era gothic tale of a bloodborne disease that turns people into hideous beasts is a neat concept for an action RPG. I like the idea of trying to find the source of the plague before it's too late, and possibly without infecting myself. The level of hero customization is also a big plus here.
Unfortunately, the lightning-fast pace and incredibly difficult combat meant that I got caught up in the risk-and-reward system, taking risks and failing to reap the rewards.
Demon spirits
Very monstrously difficult
Demon's Souls taps into themes of ancient concepts of curses, soul-eating, and controlling demonic armies. Eldritch is everything horror fans love. I've always wanted to be a demon slayer, but sadly, this isn't how I'm going to get it. The hunger of souls is strong and your adversaries are fierce.
I'm afraid if I go to Boleteria I'll end up as a snack again and again. My spirit will contribute to the problem instead of solving it. At best I'm stuck cursing my lack of reflexes which means I'll never be able to go through these wonderful looking worlds and discover all their secrets.
