Feeding your citizens is one RomstedThe most persistent initial challenges. Hunger saps productivity and morale, so a reliable food supply needs to be a priority from the moment you find your first settlement.
Fortunately, you don't need elaborate systems to stay on top of it—with the right approach, even a small settlement can feed its people well without constant micromanagement. We'll cover the best early food sources, walk you through setting up a bread supply chain that scales well with your growing population, and flag a civilian trait you'll want to avoid at almost any cost.

Best early food sources
are the two most accessible food sources in the early game Hunting game and looking for apple trees. Both are available immediately without any construction investment, making them the first line of defense against hunger to establish your settlement.
Note that you need to cook the game before cooking. Citizens do not eat raw meat!
An important caveat, though: Not all fruits are worth storing. Some fruits, eg Olives and blackberriesCarry zero food value – but your citizens will eat it regardless, meaning it disappears from food storage without making any meaningful dent in their appetite. It is well preserved for other recipes!

Your starting profession offers little boost, but Romstad has some clear winners to choose from.
How to make bread
Once you're done the fruits of the harvest The Ceres quest – which involves offering large quantities of fruit (and cabbage) to the altar – you'll unlock. bakeryAnd with it a very scalable food source: bread. Bread is easy to make in large quantities, making it the most efficient way to feed your citizens for a very long time. Before you can bake, though, you need to set up the complete production chain:

If you see signs of eating in a potential citizen, think very carefully before welcoming them. A single herbivorous resident can destabilize a food supply that was otherwise perfectly balanced.
