Power Rangers: Rewind Review by Rita – Good-bye Power Rangers

Rita's Rewind lacks the depth considered powerful, but its love for the series and simple yet satisfying fights still make it worthwhile.

On top of that, developer Digital Eclipse is known for researching and digging through multiple franchises to give players the best possible experience, so the title is full of Easter eggs. Let's look for the best.

Robo Rita returns

If you're a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fan and have no idea where Robo Rita came from, you're not alone. This version of the villain was introduced in the Netflix special Power Rangers: Once and Always (2023) and is described as the pure evil of Rita Repulsa, stripped of any redeeming qualities that made her the Mystic Mother years later.

So, we can assume Rita's Rewind is a direct sequel to that story starring David Yost (Billy), Walter Jones (Jack), Steve Cardenas (Rocky), Katherine Sutherland (Cat), and more returning cast members.

The beginning of it all

While the story is a bit rushed, Rita's idea of a rewind is to go through some iconic moments from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. On that note, the game begins with an episode called “Yesterday of the Dumpster”. This is a direct reference to “Day of the Dumpster,” the pilot for the original series that kickstarted the franchise.

Jack's style is unbeatable

All the characters shine in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, but you'll have more fun thanks to Jack. Many of the stages have boom boxes spread around, referencing the show's opening where he battles putties with dance moves.

What's more, on the subway stage, two enemies with a very special dress code will come at you. While Kimberly isn't amused, Jack will point out that their outfits are classic because he's worn many of the same outfits on the show and is always the most colorful of the gang.

to the rescue

As you battle hordes of putties and defeat giant bosses with the Megazord, you might even save four innocent civilians during your adventure. All of these characters are featured in the original TV show. Once you rescue them, you can talk to each one at the juice bar to get a souvenir.

Missing in memory

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: After the credits of Rita's rewind roll, the digital eclipse included tributes to Thuy Trang and Jason David Frank (Trinny Kwan and Tommy Oliver), the original yellow and green Rangers, respectively. It's a heartfelt tribute to two of the most important characters in the entire franchise.

However, fans noticed that the actors Ernie and Jordan, the owner of Angel Grove's juice bar, also passed away, and although their characters are featured in the game with several lines, they were not mentioned in the credits.

Megaputty

As you progress through the story of Rita's Rewind, you'll encounter different versions of Putty Patrollers, aka Putties, Rita's foot soldiers. Some will throw stuff at you, others will morph their arms to attack you with rocks or spikes, and others will summon bombs to hurt you.

There's also a giant three-headed putty, and you might not know it's part of the official canon. While it is not featured in the TV show, Megaputty is part of the BOOM! Go Power Rangers! Comic with a solo appearance in issue #13.

Easter eggs galore

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind has some secrets hidden in each stage, and we could fill another list with all the episodes referencing these memories. Even if you don't go through the entire storyline of the original show, these compilations are a great way to remember some of the series' iconic moments.

From the punk potion that turns Kimberly and Billy into evil versions of themselves, to the iconic green candle, or the genie lamp from the “Switching Place” episode.

2

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Origins

Episode 2 is titled Feathered Friends and begins at an industrial waste site stage. Here, you will rescue a character, discover many secrets, and encounter Tenga warriors for the first time. Amongst the many fights you'll encounter, you can see the four Little Turtles drinking from a pool of industrial waste, apparently referencing the origin of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

As strange as this sounds, don't forget that Power Rangers In Space featured a crossover with TMNT and a comic book merged the franchises again in 2019.

Lord Zedd is coming

Robo Rita's head is being captured by Lord Z's ship in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Rita's Rewind.

The credits roll as you see nothing but space in the background. However, after the credits roll, Robo Rita's head is seen floating between planets and asteroids. After a while, a spaceship hatch appears around the head. After a few moments, the camera pans out slightly to show what appears to be a large Z.

This is an obvious reference to Lord Zedd, the main villain of the second season of MMPR and one of the best looking bad guys. Is Digital Eclipse working on a sequel?
