The Switch 2 won't be the first handheld console to offer a mouse-like alternate mode for its controllers (one), as Lenovo's Legion GO already did the same in 2023.
The Nintendo Switch 2 The Joy-Cons may be able to function as a computer mouse, according to circumstantial evidence that has emerged recently. While it's doubtful whether the mouse-like controller mode will gain widespread adoption among game developers, the alleged feature seems to fit Nintendo's track record of use.
Evidence pointing to this possibility was shared by Famiboards user LiC, who previously obtained some Vietnamese customs data describing shipments belonging to a company believed to be one of Nintendo's parts suppliers. This proved to be a goldmine of intelligence and the source of many Switch 2 rumors and speculations that have surfaced online since mid-2024.

Rumor: 2022 open-world RPG coming to Nintendo Switch 2
Some newly emerged evidence suggests that the 2022 open-world RPG is currently in the process of being ported to the Nintendo Switch 2.
In early January 2025, LiC returned to Famiboards to share another possible insight into the upcoming device, revealing that they had previously discovered mention of a polyethylene (PE) plastic adhesive tape described in customs declarations as intended to “stick to game console handles”. Shipping data reportedly labels these tape pieces as “mouse soles,” which are commonly used for the bottom of a computer mouse. The mention of mouse soles in the list of potential Switch 2 parts suggests that the upcoming console may be able to replicate mouse-like functionality.
LiC has detected references to two mouse sole model numbers: LG7 and SML7. Game Rant was unable to find these designations in any public component databases, so if they are real, they belong to brand-new products that have yet to be released. Data obtained by LiC suggests that both plastic tape pieces are 90 x 90mm in size. Based on previously leaked Switch 2 dimensions, these sheets look large enough to cover the entire back of the new Joy-Cons, and then some. But since they have a square aspect ratio, assuming LIC's information is valid they will require additional trimming before they can be applied during assembly.
The Nintendo Switch 2 won't be the first console with a mouse controller mode
While consistent with Nintendo's historical trend of using a mouse-like controller mode, this type of technology has already been commercialized. The Lenovo Legion GO's right controller can also function as a mouse when rotated to the side in a joystick-like shape. Lenovo also provides a rounded piece of plastic to hold the controller in this mode and help it slide more efficiently across surfaces.
Lenovo's 2024 handheld PC also boasts magnetic rails for easily attaching controllers, which is another feature rumored with the Switch 2. In this sense, Legion GO could provide a glimpse of what Nintendo's second attempt at a hybrid console might look like.
