Originally, Stadium was a best-of-seven game mode, though Overwatch 2 Changed to best-of-five starting in season 19 to avoid slugging games.
Overwatch 2 Competitive Stadium is going back to best of seven
now, Overwatch 2 has announced its intention to reverse this change. In a thread on Twitter, Overwatch 2 Sporting director Aaron Keller confirmed that the competition will go back to seven rounds from October 30 at the Stadium. Players can expect a short one-hour outage for ranked stadiums when the change takes effect, but they will otherwise be able to play games.
According to Keller, this was reversed because the best-of-five format “didn't quite feel right.” Those two extra possible rounds provide more wiggle room for adaptive strategies and big comebacks that help make games feel less one-sided, even if they're longer because of it. Fans can expect a deeper dive into the reasoning behind this decision in the next director's tech blog in early November.
While some players prefer the five-round format, most fans seem happy to see this change, esp Overwatch 2 Stadium gadgets are now in the mix. Fortunately, those who want to play best-of-five stadiums can still do so in Unranked Quick Play, which also includes backfill and cross-play between all platforms.
There may be some other small hotfixes and changes before this, but for the next big update Overwatch 2 The mid-Season 19 patch is expected around November 11. Not much is known about this update yet, although it will be the debut of Cyber Fuel Junkrat, the first instance of a second Mythic hero skin dropping in the same season. Additionally, for the hero test weekend Overwatch 2 Hero 45 is coming at some point around this time, meaning players will likely see the last new character of 2025 in the next few weeks. No heroes or maps have been released for the stadium yet, however Overwatch 2 Could still surprise fans – and if not, Season 20 on December 9th will definitely add some more stuff to the game mode.
