Which video game sequels were harder than their predecessors? It's an easy question to ask, but it's hard to find consensus when answering it. Difficulty is subjective, after all, and there are only a few examples of something that is clearly, near-absolutely, more challenging.
Even so, there is a measure of subjectivity involved, isn't there? Someone out there found Zelda II: Link's Adventure easier than The Legend of Zelda. I don't know who they are. I don't know where they are. I'm in awe of their hard-as-nails NES era fantasy mastery of the side-scrolling genre. But they exist.

What is difficult for you?
A recent Reddit thread exemplifies the “what's hard for you, is weird for me” philosophy. User poubelle2table – “poubelle” means “garbage can” in French, by the way, so good on them for converting something into something else? – considered whether they were unfamiliar with a wider variety of examples. “The original XCOM: UFO Defense,” they recall, “was released in 1994 [and] The following year there was a sequel, XCOM: Terror from the Deep.” This is just one example they Can think – surely, there are many, they ask?
“Advance Wars 2, they specifically said, 'This title is for those who win first,'” neo_sporin recalls. Delliot90 chimed in: “Look, what? The first stages are hard for a first game?” neo_sporin was surprised in return: “I am confused by your confusion. [Advance Wars] Generally considered too easy for many, if not all of them. [Advance Wars 2] Starts hard and gets harder.”
“The Witcher 2 completely changed the formula to fit the ARPG expectations of modern games,” said masterbeatty35 of CD Projekt's 2011 sequel. “The original was a rhythm-based click battle.” Djebeo was an interesting counterpoint. “I would argue that the combat in Witcher 1 was so difficult, that you had to submit to this monstrosity of 'gameplay' so that you could enjoy the game's wonderful writing and atmosphere.”
The Witcher 2, though, has a difficulty-curve oddball, as other Redditors mentioned. “I remember struggling at first in general, but then, after a few hours on the flotsam, it became a lot easier,” Marchem explained. This tracks with my own experience, though only to a point – I'm not a pro Witcher 2 gamer, obviously, because for me it went from hard to average?
Not so much for the sequel angle – although, there are some back and forths to it too – but the original Halo also received uneven memories. ” legendary [difficulty mode] It was challenging, but fair,” said Izagar, while Khinjaw disagreed completely: “Personally, I think CE makes a difference in the type of legendary. There are many things in the CE legend that seem either unfair or at least strange. It's just a giant slog.”
“I think Hades 2 is definitely harder than Hades 1,” Lazy-Owl-5148 established, “There are more bosses, more enemy types, and you need to be fully focused in more fights.” had a different story to tell. “Maybe it's just me, but I found Hades 2 easier than ever.” ScottyBoy314 “Can't give a proper rating, since I have a lot of muscle memory from heads 1 to 2, but I can say that your dash definitely has less i-frames, Omega charging can really screw you up, and sure enough, Olympus runs were harder than almost anything even before heads 1/h threw you up.”
“DKC1 vs. DKC2” didn't make any sense when Moldypond cited it, but so did “tropical freeze vs. returns”. “Huh,” expressed herman666. “I thought exactly the opposite. I was disappointed by how hard Tropical Freeze returned.” Moldy asked for clarification on whether this is the original version of each, as Tropical Freeze was ported from the Wii U to the Switch, and returns from the Wii/3DS to the Switch. “I think I found the levels to be more difficult,” continued Herman; “Maybe it's okay because I beat the return first.” Personally, I think Tropical Freeze is both tough… and too high.
top comment is At least it brought greater unity. “Devil May Cry 3 is an infamous one, especially the US version,” Ragmanchkin responded to very little pushback. DMC3 is a tough game by most definitions of the word, if you ask me, but the North American version was notorious for being even tougher. As a 2018 WordPress article by PlatinumParagon explains, the PAL and Japanese versions' difficulty settings of Easy, Normal, and Hard are essentially normal, hard, and Very funny In NA, respectively.
