Subaru turns back to Natsuki Zero again Season 4, Episode 6, allowing Emilia and Julius Juukulius to hog the spotlight. This allows Emilia and Julius to battle Reed Astrea, the deranged but powerful examiner of the second exam. Passing the Sword Saint test is Team Subaru's current priority, but it is not easy to achieve.

The Power of Reed Astria
Unfortunately, the difficulty of the second test pales in comparison to the previous test which Subaru Natsuki managed to overcome on her own. This time, Subaru's group must find the courage within themselves to defeat Reed Astrea, an old sword master with deep ties to Reinhard Van Astrea, the current Sword Saint and one of the strongest characters in Re:Zero.
Armed with only a pair of chopsticks, Reed stands in the way of the Astria Subaru's group, blocking their path with excessive arrogance and confidence. As Subaru wants to take the lead as he often does, Julius Juculius draws the Heavenly Sword to confront Reed.
What follows is an intense brawl as steel meets stick, and the entire battlefield is instantly consumed by the sheer pressure of Julius and Reed's single combat. Clearly, Reid is far superior to Julius, and despite having nothing but a pair of chopsticks in hand, he hands Julius a humiliating defeat. Even after Anastasia hits Reed with light magic, the latter remains completely unfazed, even going so far as to slice through the light with nothing but his chopsticks.

Emilia takes the win for Team Subaru
Outsmarting the Wild Side of Sword Saint
With Julius Juculius unconscious, Emilia proceeds to take another reed, Astria. The atmosphere changes a bit, becoming more lighthearted as Reed shows a particular fondness for beautiful girls. Realizing the power difference between them, Emilia challenges Reid to a simple contest, hoping to level the playing field in her own way. This proves to be a smart move, allowing Emilia to handle Reed without relying solely on brute force.
Once Reed moves even a step from his position, it will immediately count as a victory for Emilia. Likewise, Emilia unleashes a barrage of ice-based magic attacks, summoning sharp ice swords in quick succession to defeat Reid. The entire battle scene is a sight to behold, with Emilia's beautifully animated ice magic transforming the arena into a dazzling display of frozen artistry. Fortunately, Emilia emerges victorious, as Reid Astria is finally distracted by her own antics, leaving an opening she successfully exploits to secure victory.
Julius Juculius wants a third chance

Inspired by Subaru Natsuki's never-give-up attitude, Julius Juculius confronts Reed Astrea once again, determined to redeem himself and push back his previous defeat. As a royal knight, Julius refuses to accept failure as his final outcome, not only for Anastasia's sake but to support his own pride. This is a reckless move, considering Reid Astrea is much stronger, faster, and more experienced in the way of the sword.
While this was happening, the rest of the group met with Ram to discuss Reid Astrea's power and their low chances of passing the second test. Subaru quickly notices that Julius is nowhere to be seen and, without hesitation, returns to the second floor. He finds him locked in a brutal fight where Reed kills Julius with a pair of deadly chopsticks.
Fortunately, Re:Zero Season 4, Episode 6, skips another brutal character death, instead allowing Subaru to arrive in time and intervene before Julius is executed. Overall, the episode offers satisfying sword and sorcery action, and even without a brutal character death, it still manages to leave a strong impression through Reed Astria's formidable fighting prowess, Emilia's daring gamble, and Julius Juculius' unwavering resolve and growth in the face of defeat.
