Selling original secret layer cards in MTG stores

summary

  • Wizards will let stores sell unique secret layer cards, addressing fans' desire for more ways to purchase these drops.

  • This move aims to provide an alternative way to get secret layer cards outside the website.

  • Supplies are still limited, however, so it remains to be seen if this will help more fans avoid disappointment when the new cards drop.

Wizards of the Coast has announced a change to the way some cards are distributed in the Magic: The Gathering's Secret Layer series. As part of an upcoming trial, you'll be able to get mechanically unique Secret Lair cards outside of the Secret Lair website.

As explained in a new blog post, this will work by allowing Wizards Play Networks Stores to sell these Secret Lari cards. In practice, this means that Wizards will make a “limited amount” of exclusive card drops available in stores, so there is another opportunity to get them besides the website or wait for a reprint.

“Many Secret Layer cards are reprints, but occasionally, we mechanically create unique cards,” the blog post explains. “We've heard from fans that they want more ways to access those cards outside of the Secret Layer website. Historically we've addressed this through the “SLX” program, in-multiverse on the list. Landing on reskins.

“However, the inventory is gone, so we're trying a different approach – allowing Wizards Play Networks to sell directly to you.”

Of course, this may not help the issue of not having enough stock for all the fans who want these cards. But at the very least, if they go out of stock before you can pick them up, you can try going to your local store and see if they have them. Supplies will still be limited, but that means you have a backup.

It also doesn't look like it will be backdated, meaning we're still waiting for mechanically unique cards from Doctor Who and Tomb Raider drops. That said, this new method of distribution is just a test at this point.

It's time to return to Magic: The Gathering's most popular planes in Innistrad Remastered.

“Finding the best ways to get mechanically unique drops into players' hands is important to us, and we're excited to try this new approach,” the post reads. “We're watching this test closely and talking to fans and WPN stores to make sure we're doing it right.”

We'll have to wait and see how it drops, and if that means fewer fans are disappointed when it drops.
