Star Fox Review

In 1993, Nintendo released Star Fox For the SNES, a highly innovative rail shooter that told the story of anthropomorphic animals fighting in spaceships. In 1997, Nintendo retold and reimagined Star FoxThere is a story in Star Fox 64. In 2011, Nintendo rebuilt Star Fox 64 For the 3DS Star Fox 64 3D. The Star Fox The story was repeated again Star Fox Zero on Wii U in 2016. And now, in 2026, Nintendo has released another. Star Fox Which effectively tells the same story, but this time on Switch 2.

Star Fox on the Switch 2 is a remake of the Nintendo 64 game, with almost the same level of design and core gameplay, but with significantly improved graphics. Like the N64 game before it, Star FoxThe campaign sees players bounce between various planets in the Lilat system in search of the villainous Dr. Andros, completing a variety of mission objectives along the way using the Irving ships of the titular Star Fox crew.

The Classic Star Fox Campaign Returns (Again)

A short but sweet experience, within every layer Star Fox offers something different. In one level players will battle enemy forces in outer space dogfights, while in another they'll face the extreme temperatures of a lava planet, complete with a boss fight against a giant magma monster. Most missions involve Fox and crew piloting their Arwings, but there's also a submarine and tank level to help spice things up.

Star Fox A game that is meant to be replayed over and over again, with alternate routes and secrets to discover. Fulfilling the conditions required to be found Star FoxUnlocking alternate paths and new levels is a thrill, and it never gets old to replay the campaign multiple times. It helps that the core gameplay is so action-packed and so much fun, of course.

Star Fox In terms of gameplay on the Switch 2 there isn't much difference from the Nintendo 64 game. In fact, they are almost identical. Players have the standard lasers and powerful bombs to destroy any enemies unlucky enough to get in their way, and the vehicles have maneuvers that make things a little more attractive than most other rail shooters. For example, the Arwing can perform barrel rolls to deflect enemy attacks, and the tank can briefly hover to get past obstacles and collect power-ups otherwise out of reach.

What's new with the Switch 2 version is the mouse controls, which work very well and offer a new way to experience the classic. Star Fox work I think many fans will want to stick with a more traditional control scheme, though Star Fox Switch 2 offers the best use of mouse controls to date. They don't take long to adjust to, and they help make a nearly 30-year-old gaming experience feel at least a little fresh.

A fresh coat of paint also goes a long way to help Star Fox The Switch 2 is different from its predecessors. Nintendo chose to go for a more photo-realistic take Star Foxcharacters and worlds, with greatly improved graphics that make it unrecognizable compared to older games. New Star Fox The character designs aren't for everyone, but they're undeniably detailed, and with top-notch performance to boot, everything looks sharp. New and expanded cutscenes are also included Star Fox On the Switch 2, though, I was disappointed that the multifaceted prologue mission starring Fox's dad, James McCloud, was just a cutscene and not playable.

As the graphics are miles ahead of the older games, so is the voice acting (if it's not exactly perfect), and while some of the campy charm is lost, it's an overall improvement. Nintendo retold of all times Star Fox Storywise, the Switch 2 version is easily the best looking and best acting. Star FoxCampaign on Switch 2 is an improvement over previous iterations thanks to these upgrades, but those who have already played the older versions extensively may find it difficult to spend $59.99 on the experience, at its core, already available on Nintendo Switch 2 via the Switch Online Expansion Pack N64 game livery.

Star Fox Multiplayer is a mixed bag

Star Fox Cargo Objective

Others will likely take the case Star FoxCooperative implementation of Instead of doing the proper co-op mode for the campaign, Star Fox on Switch 2 opts for one of Nintendo's cop-out co-op modes, which is just a very low-key way to play the game. in Star FoxIn the case of, Nintendo basically splits the functionality between two players, so one person controls the Arwing's movements and the other controls the guns. This is not an ideal way to experience it Star FoxAnd it's hard to shake the feeling that the mod was tacked on to say the game has a co-op campaign. This is not true co-op, and if you go into it expecting true co-op, you will be very disappointed.

But when it comes to the biggest disappointment Star Fox A remake on Switch 2, it lacks split-screen multiplayer altogether. Star Fox 64 Split-screen was a blast back in the day, but that was removed with the Switch 2 version. Star Fox Supports GameShare so it's at least a small It's still easy to play local multiplayer games, but the lack of split-screen is the game's biggest misstep.

star fox pvp

If you can get over the lack of split-screen, Star Fox PvP multiplayer is fun, but light on content. Star Fox Multiplayer battles are 4v4 skirmishes where players can compete against local friends on other Switch consoles, bots, or online players. Star Fox There are only three multiplayer maps at launch, and so it gets repetitive pretty quickly, but multiplayer-specific power-ups and competitive thrills keep it at least somewhat engaging.

“beat” Star Fox Nintendo Switch 2 takes 1.5 – 2 hours depending on skill level, but there are alternate routes, a challenge mode to tackle, and multiplayer to take into account.

While multiplayer is fun, for the most part, if you play Star Fox On Nintendo 64 or 3DS, you've effectively already played Star Fox On the Nintendo Switch 2. That makes the $59.99 price tag hard to swallow, but if you're someone who's never played Star Fox First, you'll get a lot of mileage out of the Switch 2 remake.
