Pets can wear hats in normal gameplay, but for some reason there seems to be a bug with hats attached to them. For the interim, ConcernedApe says to remove any hats from your pet. The exact reason why the hat is causing the problem is unclear, but ConcernedApe shared a “scientific” reason for it. The in-game explanation is that a strange rash is happening to the animals in Juju Town, and the residents of Pelican Town want to make sure the pets' ears can “breathe” for a few days. While wearing hats on pets is one of the features that gamers without access to the 1.6 update will be waiting for, they probably won't have to wait too long for a fix.
