Rumor: Switch 2 console production may be ramping up
Some newly discovered shipping data may indicate that Nintendo is speeding up mass-production of its upcoming Switch 2 next-gen console.
The same may have happened with the Switch 2, as several items allegedly designed for Nintendo's next console have recently appeared on 1688.com, an e-commerce platform operated by Chinese retail giant Alibaba Group. One of the items first spotted by Famiboards user lanamoon is a protective carrying case said to fit the Switch 2, with dimensions of 290 x 135 x 45mm. For comparison, 2017's original Switch model measures 239 x 102 x 13.9mm. Most of the depth of the newly listed case seems to be allocated to cushioning, so even if the listing is based on the console's actual dimensions, the Switch 2 is unlikely to be anywhere near 45mm thick.
The Nintendo Switch 2 may have a 15% larger screen than the Switch OLED model
The dimensions of the carrying case therefore imply that the next Nintendo console will be significantly larger than the current-gen console. This suggestion is in line with an early 2024 analyst report that predicted the Switch 2 will have an 8-inch screen. Such a display will have a 15% longer diagonal than the 7-inch panel on the Switch OLED model.
Apart from this carrying case, a purported tempered glass protector for the Switch 2 has also surfaced online. Images on its 1688.com store page include a comparison of what appears to be an equivalent Switch protector, which also suggests that the new console will be significantly larger. Although it is unclear whether these comparisons are made with the protector for the original Switch or the OLED model, the latter seems more likely to the aforementioned theory about the 15% longer diagonal. All of this seems to support recent rumors that the Switch 2 dock will be much larger than its predecessor, possibly to accommodate a larger console.
Nintendo has said twice now that the Switch successor will be officially revealed before the end of its fiscal year 2024/25, which ends on March 31. The Switch 2 is therefore unlikely to be released before Q2 2025, and could possibly be a hit. Market much later.
