As a result, players can essentially create their own adventure with new scenes and enemies on each playthrough, making for a new experience each time.
Survivors are rescued, key items are retrieved and secret passages are opened, all of which can influence which path the player takes, and what their next adventure will look like. Although the game doesn't explicitly say so, it essentially offers multiple campaigns all wrapped into one.

While everyone already knows Silent Hill 2's While the main campaign, which sees James embark on a nightmarish adventure through Silent Hill in hopes of reuniting with his late wife, not many are aware of the other smaller stories that are featured in some of the ports. The campaign is called “Born from a Wish” and was first made available on the Xbox version Silent Hill 2 Before Greatest Hits was added to the PS2 version, it put players in the shoes of Maria as she finds herself trapped in the middle of a monster-infested city.
Although much of Maria's character and origins are shrouded in mystery for the main game, this additional story at least helps give some clarity to this dubious allure. Although automatically featured in most versions of Silent Hill 2The remake decided to leave it out, although many fans are hoping this extra campaign will appear as DLC in the future.

In the basic story, Ellie mentions a few times that she once had a close friend named Riley, who was tragically taken from her when she was still young.
This part of Ellie's life was the main focus of the DLC, Left Behind, which would become a part of the base game with the remaster, and later the remake down the line. Left Behind is slightly less combat-focused than the original campaign, centering more around character development, especially for Ellie, who is forced to accept the untimely fate of her best friend.
