From beloved companions to legendary trainers and intimidating villains, Pokemon‘s best female characters are highlights of their respective games, anime seasons, manga, or even movies. As the second Gym Leader in Pokemon Red & Green, and Ash’s first female friend, Misty set the standard for Pokemon heroines; meanwhile, Team Rocket’s Jessie wrote the playbook for Pokemon villainesses, even if she is a bit more comedic than most other antagonists that would follow her.
We are slowly approaching Pokemon‘s 30th anniversary, and those three decades have been filled with memorable battles, great designs, and characters who managed to capture audiences across multiple media. In celebration of the franchise’s leading and supporting ladies, let’s highlight the best women and girls in Pokemon history.
Updated May 17, 2026 by Mark Sammut: I have added a few more characters who deserve to be featured in this discussion. They take up the final three spots.
We are going to mix up roles and media, so this won’t be just a list of Ash’s companions and Jessie.

Caitlin
Psychic Trainer
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Platinum
- Generation Introduced: 4
- Role: Minor character turned into an Elite Four in Black and White
A rare example of a video game character who appears in multiple generations, Caitlin is introduced as the head of the Battle Castle in Pokemon Platinum‘s Battle Frontier, where she oversees the player’s battle against her butler. That might not sound interesting on paper, but the “cool” part is why she doesn’t battle herself: She is a psychic who has to keep her emotions in check at all times. Losing her temper can have disastrous consequences.

Caitlin’s more prominent appearance happens in Generation 5’s Black and White, where she appears as a member of the Elite Four. She underwent strict training to master her powers, giving her an arc that is frankly unusual for somebody who is ultimately a minor character in the franchise.

Emma
Lumiose City’s Detective
- Game Introduced: Pokemon X and Y
- Generation Introduced: 6
- Role: Supporting Character in X and Y and Legends: Z-A
Before becoming more recognizable due to her appearance in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Emma was arguably the most underrated character in the franchise, regardless of gender. Introduced in X and Y‘s post-game, she is an orphan living who is trying to survive on the streets of Lumiose City, and she is taken in by Detective Looker. This storyline blends tragedy and silliness to create something that works as both (basically, Emma is mind-controlled to become a super thief called Essentia).
Her quest is pretty much buried due to when it happens, meaning players who stopped after completing the main quest never even got to meet Emma. In Legends: Z-A, Emma is no longer a vulnerable teenager and has actually taken over Looker’s detective agency, making her an important figure in Lumiose City. All of this happened in just a couple of years, so she went through quite a quick transformation.

Bonnie
Pokemon’s Younger Sibling
- Game Introduced: Pokemon X and Y
- Generation Introduced: 6
- Role: Supporting Character, Anime Main Character
Bursting with little sister energy, Bonnie seems to be one of those companions that either ranks at the top or the very bottom for most people. Traveling alongside Serena, Clement, and Ash, Bonnie is by far the most immature and innocent of the bunch, but it is her infectious excitement that really makes her lovable. Although she can be a bit too much at times, she is generally charming and rarely slips into annoying territory, and she can be pretty funny as well (for instance, her determination to act as her brother’s matchmaker).
For the vast majority of her anime run, Bonnie is a comedic character; however, she also works as an emotional core, as was proven through her bond with Squishy. She even stood her ground against Zygarde in an effort to get the Pokemon to calm down. Clearly, Bonnie is one brave girl.

Kris
The First Female Playable Character
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Crystal
- Generation Introduced: 2
- Role: Playable Character
Kris is iconic for one main reason, as it was groundbreaking for the series to have a female playable character for the first time. This came with Pokemon Crystal, the third entry in the Johto Generation 2 saga following Gold & Silver. Despite this fact, she didn’t return for the remakes, instead being replaced with a new character, Lyla.

Kris also didn’t feature in the anime. However, a lookalike was included in the special, The Legend of Thunder!, but she was known as Marina. Although she has not had much play in the series, the fact that she was the first female that players could use in the games was groundbreaking enough to earn her a spot on this list.

Lorelei
Kanto Elite Four Member
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Red & Blue
- Generation Introduced: 1
- Role: Kanto Elite Four Member
Back in the original Red & Blue, Lorelei was a formidable member of the Elite Four thanks to her tough squad of Ice-type Pokemon. Lapras and Jynx are some of the strongest original 151 Pokemon, and it takes a lot to bring them down.
With Cloyster and Dewgong also being Water-type, it takes a lot more than just firepower to get one over on this iconic Elite Four member. Nostalgia plays a big factor when it comes to iconic characters, and Lorelei certainly earns her spot because of this.

Clair
Tough Johto Gym Leader
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Gold & Silver
- Generation Introduced: 2
- Role: Blackthorn City Gym Leader
The role of the toughest Gym Leader in Johto fell to Clair, the first Dragon-type Gym Leader of the series, and fans know how tough that type can be. Especially considering, at the time, her ace Kingdra was only weak to Dragon-types, and gamers couldn’t acquire one until after gaining the Gym Badge.

Every Pokemon Anime Season, Ranked
The Pokemon anime has been around for a long time. As such, it’s worth considering which seasons are the best of the bunch.
Having a tough and memorable gym battle is enough, but Clair is also fairly prominent in the anime, too, appearing in the Johto journeys, but she also reappears in the Black & White era, where she battled fellow Dragon expert Iris.

Sabrina
One Of The Original Gym Leaders
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Red & Blue
- Generation Introduced: 1
- Role: Saffron City Gym Leader
Another Gym Leader, Sabrina was part of Kanto’s original roster of eight. Back in Generation 1, Psychic was the second-strongest type, and Sabrina’s Saffron City gym battle was always a tough one with her powerful Alakazam. With no Dark-types, no strong Bug-type moves, and very few Ghost-types, there wasn’t a lot that players could do against Sabrina.
She also popped up in an interesting story in the anime that involved her manifesting a Psychic clone of her younger self. The Pokemon Adventures manga also had a different take on Sabrina as she was a member of Team Rocket working for the evil Elite Four. Whatever version of Sabrina it is, she takes the cake as one of the best Pokemon main female characters.

Whitney
The Infamous Johto Gym Leader
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Gold & Silver
- Generation Introduced: 2
- Role: Goldenrod City Gym Leader
Whitney. The name still haunts Pokemon fans’ nightmares to this day thanks to her dreaded Miltank. Gamers who played Gold & Silver will certainly remember this pink-haired gym leader.
Miltank may be one of the strongest Pokemon in the game thanks to this battle. Without any real access to Fighting-types before this gym, Miltank is a real problem to take down. The rollout attack just keeps getting stronger as players chip away at Miltank’s insane health. It was a real struggle back in 1999.

Officer Jenny
Basically, The Pokemon World’s Only Police Officer
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Yellow
- Generation Introduced: 1
- Role: Recurring Anime Character
Initially, Officer Jenny was exclusive to the anime. Much like Nurse Joy, she was introduced as a family of Police Officers who all look the same and pop up in most towns and cities across the Kanto region. Known for her partner Pokemon Growlithe, Jenny was always there for Ash and his friends to help out with the pesky Team Rocket.

Most Iconic Anime Girls With Blue Hair
From Sailor Mercury to Shino Asada, there’s no shortage of iconic anime women who sport blue locks.
As Pokemon Yellow introduced some anime elements to the games, such as Jessie & James, Officer Jenny also had a small role. She is an NPC in Vermillion City who gifts the player a Squirtle, an obvious reference to the Squirtle Squad in the series.

Green
Pokemon Manga Hero
Readers of the Pokemon Adventures manga will certainly remember Green. One of the main antagonists of the Red & Blue chapter, Green floats around on her Jigglypuff, spying and pulling the strings in her goal to take down Team Rocket.
Although Green isn’t in a lot of Pokemon media, there is no question that she is an iconic heroine. The Pokemon world would not be the same without that oddly disturbing manga, and she is a very important character in those stories. However, she does make her bow in Generation 7’s Let’s Go Pikachu & Eevee as a boss battle at the end of the game.
