Dead or Alive 6: The Final Round, a re-release of the 2019 fighting game, was released last week. Significantly, the original version of the game was also removed from storefronts – something that never went down well with players.
After 405 reviews, the re-release has dropped to a 'mostly negative' review score on Steam as players complain about incomplete features and the gating of content previously owned by players.
Dead or Alive 6: The Last Round didn't go well
Two big missing features are crossplay and rollback. The former refers to the ability to play with people who own the game on other platforms, while the latter is a feature that compensates for netcode lag in online play.
“The least you can do is give back the characters I have, you did it [Dead or Alive 5] who [Dead or Alive 5: Last Round]. They could do with the bare minimum with crossplay and rollback,” writes one Steam reviewer.
Dead or Alive 6: The Final Round costs $40, and includes five additional characters (Nyotengu, Phase 4, Momiji, Rachel, and Tamaki) that were not included in the original base game.
While most of the content was carried, Team Ninja released a post revealing that Mai Shiranui and Kula Diamond (and their costumes) would not be able to make it to the final round. Instead, players will be charged $11 per character (up from $8, their price in the original game).
Mai and Kula are both crossover characters from SNK's The King of Fighters series, which probably explains why they technically can't be carried over to the new game.
Some of the new features, such as photo mode, are particularly surprising to players because they are unnecessary additions while expected features such as crossplay and rollback are absent.
“It's disgraceful. Tecmo just sees this as a comer franchise and thinks they can get away with the absolute bare minimum,” writes one passionate reviewer. “I love Dead or Alive, but there's no way this could be a moderately competent fighting game with that kind of attitude. Until they at least do something, this review stays the same.”
Needless to say, there are a lot of disappointed fans who were expecting something new from the series that didn't get a new game from 2019.
