The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim It did a lot of things well, even if its main story left many fans lukewarm. One of its biggest successes is the world, where, for the first time, we had an abundance of handcrafted uncharted locations, unique dungeons, and sprawling cities that truly felt like dynamic microcosms of NPCs. Skyrim It feels like a sandbox, a real world that you can live in and live in for a while, full of character even years later.

Skyrim: 25 Perfect Wives and How to Marry Them
From Aela to Mjoll the Lioness, here are our picks for the best wives in Skyrim, along with tips for gaining their trust and romancing them.
With more news The Elder Scrolls 6 While the wait continues, it's a good time to get back to it Skyrim And remember all our favorite places. If you're planning to start another playthrough soon, here are some places you'll want to revisit for old time's sake. Or, if you're just getting into Bethesda's latest The Elder Scrolls game, then make sure you put these spots on your itinerary.
Whiterun
A beloved first city and first home
It's hard to pick a good city in Skyrim. Loneliness has an impressive presence, but many players don't naturally end up there until later in the game. Whiterun, on the other hand, is close to Helgen, and the main quest will guide you there quickly. Its player home is the most accessible in the game, as it's cheap to buy and upgrade, and its central location makes it a good place to set up your base of operations.
Visually, Dragonreach is beautiful, tucked away from the rest of the city, from the bustling market to the fountain area where the statue of Talos is found. You'll also meet countless iconic characters here: Jarl Barlgruuf, the most remembered character after Nazeem, who makes you wonder if you've ever made it to the Cloud District. Of course you don't! Whiterun is a safe haven, an old first home for many players, and for that, it is unforgettable.
Shrine of Azura
The great statue of Azura against the background is a sight to behold
If the Temple of Azura looks vaguely familiar to you, it's because this iconic statue has a very similar real-life twin in Turkey. A visual masterpiece, this temple is located in the northeastern part of Skyrim, just before you reach Winterhold and Windhelm in the cold mountains above. This wilderness is something out of a fantasy book, visible from a distance in its glory.
Approach it, and you'll encounter a lone priest and embark on one of the game's many Daedric quests. Even if the quest itself isn't perfect, it's worth your time to come to this place at least once to visit it and admire the scenery around it, and a must-do stop for everyone when visiting Winterhold.
neck of the world
Skyrim's highest point is one heck of a climb
Another key discovery location is the Neck of the World, the highest point in the entire province. The mountain is so attractive that it can be viewed from afar from countless viewpoints. You can try and scale it from different angles, which makes for a good challenge, but the easiest way is to step from Ivarstead like a true pilgrim.
You'll probably visit this place soon after you've defeated your first dragon and been summoned to High Hrothgar by the Greybeards. The location is also very impressive, proceeding along the path where you will eventually talk to Paarthurnax. Impressive heights and desolate, snowy, windy scenery are its essence. SkyrimAfter completing this part of the game and learning something about your first scream you will never forget it.
Grotto of the Bloated Man
A gorgeous cave with a cool blade
Located north of Lake Ilinalta on the other side of the mountain range, you can randomly wander into a cave known as Bloated Man's Grotto. It's one of the most beautiful caves in Skyrim because of how much greenery there is here, and at the end of it, you'll find Talos' secret shrine with some loot, including Bolar's Oathblade, an enchanted katana.
If you are looking for a unique weapon, definitely turn here. Otherwise, a Daedric quest for Hircin, Ill Met by Moonlight, will also eventually lead you here to get rid of the Sindig. Most of the caves in Skyrim are dark, muddy caverns, but this one, the Ancestor Glade, and one more that we'll cover later, are all you'll encounter.
Labyrinth
One of the largest Nordic remains
Skyrim's specialty is the variety of Nordic ruins you'll wander through, and the Labyrinthian is certainly one of the largest, most impressive. Handcrafted dungeons were one of Skyrim's main advertising points, it's a no-brainer to include Labyrinthian in one of the most iconic locations. It has a huge, elaborate outer section, and used to be one of the crown jewels of the Dragon Cult.
Some lore suggests that it may have once served as the capital city of the province, and judging by its appearance, it doesn't seem far-fetched. If you're a collector, it's also here that you can get all eight Dragon Priest masks to get your hands on the ninth. Although you can come here at any time, you may want to start the College of Winterhold quest first, which will bring you here. There's also the Lost Walkieg, a separate dungeon that isn't attached to any questlines.
Falkreath
Heavily forested areas are the opposite of the rift
It was a tough choice between the autumnal glory of the Rift's forest and the deep green and forested realms of Falkreath, so this time, we chose Falkreath Hold. It's also an iconic hold because it's where Dragonborn's story technically begins. You are heading down the road towards Helgen as a prisoner, and this is where you encounter the first dragon and have to escape from close range.
The visuals are absolutely flawless, and if you're partial to some graphic and cosmetic mods, you can make Falkreath's forest look even more appealing with a few tweaks. There's also a fun little Daedric quest that involves a talking dog, and of course, a secret entrance to a dark group sanctuary that people only whisper about.
The Forgotten Valley
An unforgettable subplot for the Dawnguard DLC
About time we mentioned one of the DLC locations. It was another tough choice between the Forgotten Vale and Tel Mithryn, which is found in Solstheim and is a nice callback to the exotic and strange vistas of Morrowind. However, the glacial, desolate scenery of the Forgotten Valley has little edge. It's also a bit magical because the whole place has an influence of the lore of the Snow Elves or Fulmar.
We only see Falmer in their twisted forms in Dwemer ruins, so to actually see what one of their homes looked like is a little magical, to say the least. It's here that you'll uncover Auriel's Bow, but it's also here that you'll find twin dragons emerging from the ice in spectacular fashion. Really, it's a reason to jump into Dawnguard's questline, just to experience it all over again.
Sovngarde
The stage for Skyrim's final showdown
Sovngarde is a location that players will only hear mentioned in the game in religious or superstitious contexts, until the main quest brings you there to face off against Alduin. This is the Nordic afterlife, a place where eternal feasts are given for heroes, and what a beautiful place it is. The sky is lit up with a red aurora, and distant statues and ruins stare at you when you first arrive here.
And then there's Tsun, your final challenge before giving you a pass to the afterlife and the main quest's boss fight. While of Skyrim While the main story is somewhat weak as it doesn't give players much agency, you have to admit that it's an incredible backdrop for the game's climax.
Alderglum Sanctuary
Kynareth's most beautiful holy site
Previously, we've discussed some of Skyrim's iconic and magnificent natural caves, but nothing beats the view of the Alderglum Sanctuary. This is a place best visited during a quest, because to get close to the sacred tree in the middle, you need a special weapon that is given to you by Danica Shuddha-Vasanta. You can start this quest by visiting the Temple of Cannareth in Whiterun.
A pillar of light, shining on a giant tree with sprawling roots that block your path to everyone, creates this super cinematic feel for such a small, simple quest. They didn't have to work that hard to make this place beautiful, but they did. It's a true testament to Bethesda's environmental storytelling skills, which they'll deliver again with the franchise's final sixth game.
Blackreach
Just when you thought you'd seen everything
The first time you set foot in Blackreach is nothing short of magical. By now, you've probably climbed all kinds of dungeons, caves, underwater spaces, and high mountains. Blackreach surprises you as you enter it through its three Dwemer city gates.
It's a magnificent, vast cavern of bioluminescent light, dangerous Dwemer and Falmer enemies, as well as a secret underground dragon encounter. Make sure you come when you're really ready to fight hard against your enemies, because this is a tough place, but visually, without parallel. Nothing quite as magical as Bethesda's take on the Underdark. It shows how much love and attention to detail went into Skyrim's world building.
