Nintendo and Game Freak have been running a pretty leaky ship over the past few years, though the latest batch of Pokemon leaks is the most devastating of all. Not only has the name of Pokemon Wind and Waves – the next generation reportedly been leaked but other key details like the release schedule of the series and new projects have been shared on social media.
Nintendo or Game Freak apparently have major security issues at the moment, which is very surprising when Nintendo is notorious for cracking down on anyone they feel has wronged them. It literally has a team of ninjas responsible for going after people who leak classified information, though they obviously need to go to their dojos for more training if these latest leaks are the result of their efforts.
Whenever something big happens regarding Nintendo, it's always worth checking out what pre-Nintendo marketing gurus Kit Ellis and Krista Yang have to say about the situation. Having been in for a while, they usually have some interesting insight into what Nintendo might be thinking during a crisis. However, this time the pair are very critical of how Nintendo seems to be handling its leak problem.
The Pokemon leak has pre-Nintendo marketing leads saying it needs to “broaden” its security
In the latest episode of Kit & Krysta (thanks GamesRadar), the pair talk about the latest Pokemon leak and what Nintendo might be doing to prevent more from happening in the future. Ellis begins by explaining that these leaks are probably extremely “damaging” to Nintendo and that he feels a little sorry for them, but the company “really needs to look in the mirror” and realize that they aren't great at keeping things secret.
“Just based on our own experiences dealing with leaks at Nintendo, do they, I think, when something happens, tighten up the same potential locations of leaks,” Ellis says. “And they keep tightening and tightening the same places. But there are other places that have leakage vectors that are not being addressed, maybe not being tightened, and maybe increasing.”
Ellis says that Nintendo “needs to broaden the scope of how they're thinking about this”, saying that the leaks probably aren't coming from the places Nintendo expects. Yang also adds to the conversation by revealing some of the anti-leak measures put in place during her time at the company, such as limiting communication with personal and work devices, though Yang says these were “so-called false security” measures that didn't really help.
