The terrible leadership of the Fire Nation ruined the nation

In the four nations Avatar: The Last Airbender The rest of the world was thrown off balance forever when the leaders of the Fire Nation decided it was ripe for the taking. The Fire Lords of centuries or millennia past, such as Zoryu, may not have factored into this, but when Fire Lord Sojin succeeded his father Taisho, everything went wrong. It was the leadership of the Fire Nation, not the common people or culture of the country, that caused the destruction.

The Fire Nation's own culture is a remarkable one, shaped by sheer willpower, a refined taste in theater, and an emphasis on honor and custom. The island nation is also home to the world's first example of industrialization, where the royal banner of Fire Lord Ozai depicts him standing among the gears of progress and exhaust pipes. However, Ozai and his fellow Fire Lords and a would-be Fire Lord nearly brought the Fire Nation to ruin. Even after heroes like Aang and Zuko saved the situation, some scars remained that slowly faded over time. In some ways, the damage was done, and the glory days of the Fire Nation were over, at least in people's minds.

The Fire Lords honed ambition and cunning into generosity

Zuko's own family suffered greatly because of the royal rules

One effect of the questionable leadership of the Fire Nation was the suffering of the royal family. Many of Zuko's own flashback sequences made it clear that he was born in a viper's nest, even by the standards of many fictional royal families. Being a prince is never easy, what with all the heavy expectations, but Zuko had it worse than the other princes. By the time Zuko was born, the Fire Lords and their kin had placed ambition and cunning above all else, brutality almost seemed to be the rule. It seems that Fire Lord Sojin started this trend, his long-ruling son Azulon continued it. In turn, Azulon passed it on to his own twisted son, Ozai, who extended it to his daughter, Azula.

The influence of such monstrous leadership was rarely seen Avatar: The Last AirbenderBecause the cartoon only had a limited amount of time to depict the full effects of the Hundred Years War, and the story was mostly about Avatar Aang. Nevertheless, the Fire Lords reformed themselves into harsh dictators who pushed the people to their limits, and this affected daily life in the Fire Nation. An example was the school Aang attended, where dancing was forbidden and disobedient students were sent to the coal mines.

Does Avatar Korra deserve the hate it's received more than a decade later?

Korra has gained hatred within the Avatar fandom over the years. Do those feelings still exist more than a decade later?

That, and the Fire Nation's militaristic ways no doubt greatly strained the country's resources and manpower, as the Fire Nation continued a century-long struggle in distant lands. Along with the victories of the Fire Nation forces in places like Omashu and Ba Sing Se, and the destruction of the Air Nomads, fighting against the entire world for so long must have been exhausting.

Worse, the ill effects of the Fire Nation leadership on the royal family and the country began to overlap, with Azula's upbringing leading her to abuse and terrorize her own subordinates. Azula, as the Crown Princess, projected all of Ozai's harshness towards her own people, amplified by her wit and drive to succeed. It eventually got so bad, Azula fired all of her staff, the Imperial firebenders, and even her Dai Li agents, much to Lo and Li's dismay.

By the time Sojin's comet arrived, Azula was falling apart and in no shape to become a Fire Lord, yet her coronation was about to take place, a worrying sign of how low the royal family had fallen. Only Zuko's intervention and fierce firebending by the following fire kai prevented the Fire Nation's fall at Azula's ready hands.

The Fire Lords Sojin, Azulon, and Ozai also dealt long-term damage to the Fire Nation in less tangible ways, which ended up solving Zuko and Aang's problems. Aside from the immense physical wounds the Fire Nation leaders inflicted on the world, those three Fire Lords also earned the world's hatred for the richest and possibly most respected region in the world. During the Eclipse attack, Zuko made this abundantly clear when confronting his father, outlining his country's many crimes. One of Zuko's best quotes avatar How the actions of the Fire Nation inspired the country's world hatred, not admiration, and Zuko also stated that the Fire Nation deserved it.

Ozai didn't want to hear that, but Zuko was right, a full century of Fire Nation aggression made it the enemy of humanity, and the greatest enemy of the time of the Avatar Cycle. When the war ended, lingering mental scars were present in Dark Horse Avatar: The Last Airbender Comics and The Legend of Korra. Firebenders were often seen as “bad guys”, dangerous people not to trust or befriend. The term “ashmaker” was also thrown around, months after the war ended.

'Avatar: The Last Airbender' sequel is good, but a prequel would be better

An 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' prequel, exploring the world before bending or the lives of previous incarnations, is much needed.

Perhaps most damning is the fact that even at the time of Avatar Korra, decades after the flashback sequence had moved forward in the timeline, firebenders were often feared or still seen as bad guys. The pro-bending athletes got along with their firebender teammates, but the common people of Republic City felt different. Amon, a masked bloodbender, exploited this fact, falsely blaming a non-existent firebender for the loss of his family and a false scar on his face. Fire Lord Izumi, Zuko's daughter, was extremely reluctant to go on the offensive even to save the world against Kuvira's Earth Empire. Izumi was haunted and ashamed by the many atrocities of her own country, as Fire Lords like Sojin and Ozai preferred war to peace and true prosperity.
