Valve has bad news about its Steam controller

Valve has announced that some Steam Controller buyers won't receive their orders until 2027. The company has plans to meet demand for the device with three estimated delivery windows expected for the new Steam controller.

After many rumours, the Steam Controller has made an exciting reveal for PC gamers. Many gamers who have already received a controller and have held their reservations for the peripheral are in luck. However, continued demand for the device has now prompted a new announcement from Valve.

Valve announces delays in current and future Steam Controller orders

Valve shared an announcement on Steam controller reservations, explaining that due to extreme demand, it wants to manage expectations regarding arrival. Valve notes that it intends to continue making the devices, but compared to demand for how many units it expects to be able to produce, the company expects that some existing orders will only be shipped in the second half of the year. Three order windows have been announced in September 2026, December 2026, and 2027, with no further details on which part of next year. Those who have already placed reservations can check the Steam Controller page to see which release window they are slotted into. Earlier customers who reserved a controller, will be placed in a window first. Orders placed since June 18 are expected to arrive before 2027, and Valve will provide updates as it further narrows the timeline.

The second Steam Controller was announced a decade after the release of the original, which was discontinued back in 2019. Unfortunately, it couldn't have come at a worse time, with the new Steam Machine and the first Steam Frame VR headset being unveiled. Demand was also high for previous releases from Valve like Steam Deck. However, Valve will have to deal with the crunch the entire game industry is currently feeling due to the expansion of AI data centers, which require a large supply of chips and processors to keep running. As a result, all kinds of gaming hardware have faced shortages and price hikes, and Valve hasn't been left immune to the trend.

While avid Steam Controller fans are disappointed to learn about this, they are still the lucky ones when it comes to new releases. The entire hardware line was expected to arrive in early 2026, but due to demand for the aforementioned parts, the new Steam Machine and Steam Frame are not yet accepting reservations or pre-orders. Valve has said that both Steam Machine and Steam Frame will ship in the summer of 2026, but that could be subject to change. Pricing on the devices is also yet to be confirmed by Valve officials, worrying those who want to buy them sooner rather than later.

Although fans may be tired of waiting, the good news is that Valve has not announced any plans to completely cancel the release of any of the three pieces of Steam hardware. For the moment, all players can do is wait to see when Valve announces more details. With any luck, the prices for Steam Machine and Steam Frame aren't too outrageous, given the high prices for computing parts.
