In most survival horror games, the main character will be forced into the position of being the hero, even if they don't want to be. Being the star of a nightmare story full of ghosts, zombies and other creatures is not a role anyone wants to fill, but sometimes, these heroes go beyond mere existence, and instead become the heroes of their own stories.

6 Alyssa Hamilton (Clock Tower 3)
Elisa musters the courage to save her mother and end the betrothal ritual
To start the story Clock Tower 3, Protagonist Alyssa is suddenly teleported to 1940s London where she must fend off a sledgehammer-wielding maniac in an attempt to return to the present to be with her mother. As the games go on, and Alyssa is transported to several other time periods, she eventually learns about a betrothal ritual that, in simple terms, allows a human to become an all-powerful 'entity', which, of course, the game's final boss tries to do.
However, stopping the ritual would not only make Lord Burroughs, as he is commonly known, extremely powerful, but it would also come at the cost of Alyssa's mother, Nancy, whose spirit would be required to work in the ritual. In a moment of heroism, Elisa puts an end to the gentleman's madness and reunites with her mother's spirit, ensuring that no harm will come to her precious guardian.

Leon S. Kennedy displays some heroic traits Resident Evil 2Like when he takes a bullet for Ada, for example, but it's in the fourth entry that he really proves to be a reliable hero who can always work. Leon's mission is simple: save the president's daughter, Ashley, from a sadistic cult known as Los Illuminados. However, it's not easy for Ashley to return home as she's been recaptured by the cult several times, and considering the fact that both she and Leon are infected until the final moments of the game.

Resident Evil: The most immersive games in the series, ranked
These Resident Evil games do a wonderful job of immersing the players in their nightmare world.
That's not to mention the numerous monsters Leon encounters on his journey, from giant salamanders and invisible bugs, to terrifying cultists and a deadly warrior from Leon's past. Most of the other characters probably wouldn't have even made it out of the village, but Leon proved why he was considered an “American hero” thanks to his actions by Saddler several times throughout the game.
4 Regina (Dino Crisis)
Regina deserves much of the credit for her efforts to stop the dinosaurs' rampage in Dino Crisis
The dino crisis
Tasked with infiltrating a secluded research facility, Regina has no way of predicting that she might expect to go up against hordes of dinosaurs as part of the mission. After she's as confused as everyone else after learning about the dinosaurs' origins and how they came from a pocket of her own time, she steps up and plays a big part in ending the horror once and for all.
For example, near the end of the game, it is Regina who receives both the stabilizer and initializer needed to overload the generator and shut down the Vertex for good. T. He is also credited with taking down a plethora of deadly dinos, including Rex who would undoubtedly have shed more blood if Regina hadn't ended their duel.
3 Artyom (Metro 2033)
Artyom is the only one who manages to contact the dark ones
Admittedly, Artyom plays a heroic role in all three Metro Games, but his fearless and determined drive to save the people he cares about is most evident in the first entry, Metro 2033. After learning of a dangerous group called the Dark Ones causing trouble for a group of survivors known as the Exhibition, Artyom tries to track them down and stop them once and for all. Along the way, Artyom loses several friends, rescues a few fellow survivors, including a young boy, and manages to deal with the Dark Ones after being killed more times than he can count by the grossly mutated creatures roaming the surface.

There are two possible endings Metro 2033 Both of which paint Artyom in a heroic light. The first sees him set off a set of missiles, seemingly defeating the darkness and making the world a little safer for the show. However in the alternate ending, Artyom deactivates the device when the Dark Ones were actually trying to make peace with the humans.

However Alan Wake 2 Split between two protagonists, Alan and Saga, it is the latter who does most of the heavy lifting, and ultimately saves the story from being distorted and twisted by Mr. Scratch. Alan's affiliation with the Dark Place takes him over at one point in the story, prompting Saga to restore his body, before rescuing Casey in similar fashion.
It is also Saga who fires a fatal bullet of light at Alan to show him the true nature of the story, and also retrieves the clicker, a device that plays an important role in the larger story. However Alan Wake 2's The story may be a little confusing, one thing is for sure, if Saga wasn't there, things would have been much, much worse.
