Xbox Chief content officer Matt Booty said that console exclusives should be a “reward” for gamers who have tried to justify their long-term support and potential users to purchase a Microsoft console. As of this writing, only two first-party Xbox titles have been announced as console exclusives for the Xbox Series X/S lineup.
Booty's comments come amid a global restructuring at Xbox. As of early July, Xbox has cut 1,600 jobs and seen studios like Double Fine and Compulsion Games go independent. In a letter to Xbox staff members, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said that business at Xbox is not in a good place and things need to change. Sharma's letter came after the June 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, which revealed that Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork revolution The release will be Xbox Series X/S console exclusive.
The Xbox console feature remains a fluid situation
Although Booty previously said that Xbox console exclusives would be on a case-by-case basis, he said gamers shouldn't focus too much on one aspect. In a GamesRadar+ interview held after the Xbox Game Showcase, Booty said, “People have to have a reason to buy an Xbox.” While Xbox has already confirmed that live-service games will remain multi-platform, Booty said that single-player games being a console exclusive to Xbox is not absolute. However, Booty admitted that this is a “good rule of thumb” for players to keep in mind, while assuring that there will be more than two Xbox-exclusive games. Booty said that, given Xbox's portfolio of more than 20 gaming franchises that have each generated more than a billion dollars in revenue, Xbox Game Studios should carefully consider what makes the console special.

On the other hand, Xbox has some major releases planned for PS5 throughout 2026. This includes a day-one projection. Hello: Campaign Evolved on July 28 and the critically-acclaimed port Forza Horizon 6 Later in the year. Hello: Campaign Evolved It went gold on July 13, almost two weeks before its release.
Noting that Xbox's portfolio currently includes major studios under Bethesda and Activision Blizzard, Booty said it's up to Xbox to make its decisions clear to users. Despite the choices made by Xbox so far, some high-profile projects such as The Elder Scrolls 6 Not confirmed to be console-exclusive. Given that The Elder Scrolls and result Franchises have been multiplatform for over two decades, time will tell what Microsoft decides.
However, Booty reassured Xbox fans by confirming that, when the Xbox Game Studios project gets a release date, the platforms on which the game will be available will be revealed at that time. With Xbox's Project Helix console still in development, it remains to be seen which of Microsoft's IPs will be used to entice gamers to buy the next-gen Xbox console.
