More often than not, the role of an anime villain is to be an obstacle in the heroes’ way that they will eventually overcome with hard work and cooperation. As such, an effective antagonist is one that, despite representing a genuine challenge, can be defeated, allowing the protagonist to grow in the process. Several of the best anime villains fulfill this role perfectly, greatly improving their respective series and leaving a lasting mark on fans.

Yet, there have been more than a handful of occasions in which a villain has become so powerful that it was nearly impossible for the heroes to defeat them. In order to emerge victorious, the protagonists were forced to rely on external forces, or outright plot convenience. These cases result in underwhelming resolutions, which not only leave fans unfulfilled but also harm the reputation of the villains.

Naruto and Sasuke Together Could Not Defeat Madara Uchiha

One of the most powerful and iconic shonen villains of all time, Madara Uchiha was a legendary warrior feared throughout the entire Shinobi World due to his outstanding strength and cunning. Born into an era of conflict and death, this ruthless man grew up believing that only by forcing humanity to live inside an eternal dream could peace be achieved. He spent more than a century creating the perfect plan to achieve his goal, increasing his strength to legendary levels.

During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Madara proved to be an overwhelmingly powerful opponent, capable of fighting against Naruto and Sasuke at full power without breaking a sweat. To beat him, the series had to introduce an entirely new villain, Kaguya, who took over the Uchiha’s body and erased his consciousness, as there was no other way for him to be defeated after granting him such a substantial power boost.

Yhwach’s Defeat Was as Convoluted as It Was Unsatisfying

Across the decades, the anime industry has introduced many characters whose powers go far beyond human comprehension. These god-like abilities are often used to elevate the stakes of a battle, such as was the case with Bleach’s Yhwach. The Quincy King’s signature ability, the Almighty, allowed him not only to see all possible futures, but also to manipulate reality and tie them.

Yhwach’s power proved to be too much for the heroes, to the point where not even Ichigo’s final form could compare, as the villain simply destroyed it before it could manifest. The heroes had to create an overtly convoluted plan, which relied heavily on plot armor, to finally bring an end to the Quincy King’s plans.

Tetta Kisaki Was Killed Off Because Takemichi Could Not Defeat Him

Unlike many other shonen of the modern era, Tokyo Revengers is not a series about supernatural fighters with godly strength fighting for the sake of the universe. Due to this, most fans were not surprised when the main villain of the series’ first half was revealed to be Tetta Kisaki. While not the strongest fighter in the series, this brilliant antagonist demonstrated to be far superior to most other cast members on several occasions.

Despite not possessing any special abilities, his intellect alone was enough to frustrate any attempts made by Takemichi to change the future. No matter what the hero would do, Tetta refused to give up, outsmarting him even when the protagonist had the advantage of time travel by his side. In the end, Kisaki was struck by a truck during his final confrontation against Takemichi, an unexpected death that left most fans unsatisfied.

Meruem Was Never Allowed to Show His Full Potential

Introduced as one of the smartest and most skillful beings in all anime history, Meruem was the cruel and stoic ruler of Hunter x Hunter’s Chimera Ant species. Besides his superior intellect, which he could utilize to its fullest capacity, this terrifying opponent was also an expert combatant, far stronger than most fighters in the show.

No one among the main cast seemed to have the ability or raw power to defeat Meruem in combat, which is why they decided to utilize the radiation from a nuclear explosion. The villain survived the initial blast, but became gravely poisoned by the residual radioactive material. He succumbed to his illness shortly after, disappointing several fans who wished to see him be surpassed by the heroes.

Light Yagami Was Caught Only Due to Luck

Brilliant, remorseless, and determined to create a world in which he was worshiped as a just and merciless god, Light is by far one of the most divisive villains in anime. From the very beginning of the Death Note anime, the protagonist was depicted as a true genius who could easily manipulate the people around him, even the world’s greatest detective.

After L’s controversial death, fans wondered how it would be possible to ever bring Light to justice, as no one else in the entire world seemed skillful enough to outsmart him. Due to this, the series relied not on Kira being discovered, but on his lackeys slipping up on several occasions, giving Near the perfect set of circumstances to uncover Light’s identity, which does not feel earned or satisfying.

Atem Had to Alter Fate to Defeat Aigami

The Yu-Gi-Oh! anime franchise is no stranger to powerful villains whose abilities represent a danger not only to the heroes, but to the entire world. Aigami, the main antagonist of the Dark Side of Dimensions film, is no exception, as he was the wielder of the Plana, an ancient magical artifact that could erase people, memories, and objects from existence. His power increased drastically after being merged with the Millennium Ring, which held the remnants of Zorc’s dark energy.

Yugi and Kaiba were forced to duel together against this impressive opponent, whose Cubic deck managed to outmaneuver the heroes in just a couple of turns. To prevent the villain from emerging victorious, the movie brought back the Pharaoh, who was supposedly long gone. Moreover, Atem utilized his magical abilities to conjure the perfect monster to destroy Aigami’s creatures and win the game.

Without Eri, Overhaul Would Have Emerged Victorious

A beloved but despicable villain who represents the worst the world of My Hero Academia has to offer, Overhaul is one of the most effective antagonists in the entire franchise. Driven by a desire to purify the world from what he assumed was a lethal illness slowly killing humanity, Chisaki was willing to go to any lengths to achieve his dreams, no matter how cruel or destructive.

During his final battle against Deku and his allies, Overhaul used his ability to deconstruct the bodies of his lackeys and become a grotesque monster. Under normal circumstances, none of the heroes present would have been able to defeat him, but fortunately for them, Eri’s Quirk went out of control. This meant she could constantly rewind Deku to a state of health even when the protagonist utilized his power at 100%, which would have killed him at any other time.

Dio Brando’s Powers Were Shamelessly Copied During His Final Battle

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a franchise famous for the unique and eccentric abilities demonstrated by its characters. The most powerful Stands of all are infamous for how broken they can become, being able to manipulate the fabric of reality itself. Dio, the original villain of the franchise and user of one of the strongest powers of them all, The World, was able to manipulate time by simply thinking about it.

The final battle of the Stardust Crusaders Arc of the anime saw Jotaro and his friends fighting this horrifying vampire, only for most of them to be easily killed thanks to Dio’s time stop. The way in which the series resolved this difference in power was to miraculously give Jotaro’s Stand the same power set as The World, allowing the protagonist to move freely while time was frozen and stripping Dio of his advantage.

Naraku Could Not Triumph Even After Obtaining the Ultimate Power

Hailing from one of the most iconic and memorable romance stories the anime industry has ever produced, Inuyasha’s Naraku was a manipulative and obsessive villain motivated by nothing but a sick desire to be Kyoko’s partner. He spent decades looking for the Shikon Jewel, a legendary treasure that could grant anyone strong enough to control it a single wish.

After being heavily injured by Sesshomaru, Naraku managed to fuse with the Shikon Jewel, but his weakened state left it vulnerable to the object’s dark influence. Before the villain could fully merge, Kagome fired an arrow that purified the soul of the demon, despite his newfound power. She would later utilize her mystical powers to do the same to the Shikon Jewel, even though the object was supposed to be stronger than her, resulting in Naraku vanishing forever.

Perfect Cell Was Seconds Away From Destroying Earth

Undoubtedly one of the most iconic villains of all time, Perfect Cell was the final evolution of Dr. Gero’s creation, built with the ultimate purpose of killing Goku and taking over the planet. While the creature quickly went against its creator’s desires, he still managed to instill fear into the hearts of all humanity, commencing one of the best tournament arcs in anime.

The Z Warriors fought bravely against this monster and his children, but their efforts seemed to be futile. Gohan attempted to finish the villain off, only to sustain heavy injuries that prevented him from fighting at full power. Still, even with the odds stacked in his favor, Cell was ultimately defeated, thanks to Goku being able to give his energy to Gohan from the Other World. While a truly memorable and amazing scene, the reasons behind it are still not as satisfactory as fans would have liked.
