Piccolo was Akira Toriyama's favorite character when he was writing Dragon BallAnd it's hard to see why. What began as one of the original series' most charismatic and iconic villains quickly became Dragon Ball Z's greatest anti-hero, he developed a personal relationship with Gohan, gradually came to terms with his humanity, and eventually grew into one of the most human characters among the Z-Fighters.

The Great Namekian Piccolo is a poor man's great monkey

Unlike more traditional transformations, Piccolo's Giant Namekian is all for show and doesn't actually give him any sort of power boost. During the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, Piccolo transforms himself into a giant Namekian so he can swallow a bottle sealed inside Kami. Goku quickly realizes that turning into a giant has not made Piccolo stronger, and uses this to his advantage.

Goku tricks Piccolo into making himself even bigger before bringing it into his mouth. Goku rescues Kami, freeing him from his bottle prison, and letting Piccolo know that all his giant Namekian form is making him bigger, not stronger. After his gambit fails, Piccolo shrinks himself back to normal size to continue his final battle with Goku.

Merging with Nell gives Piccolo his first major power boost

Namekian Fusion allows a Namekian to assimilate other members of their race with themselves for a massive power boost. Namekian Fusion is not a transformation in the traditional Super Saiyan sense, but they are often treated as forms. Dragon Ball Video games and offer almost the same caliber of power boost. Piccolo's introduction to Namekian fusion comes when he runs into a dying Nell before fighting Frieza on Namek.

Piccolo becomes Super Namekian after fusing with Kami

Just before Piccolo merges with Nell, Nell mentions that he would be stronger if he was perfect. Before the events of Dragon BallThe Nameless Namekian drains the evil from his body, creating both Kami and the Demon King Piccolo. At full power, the Nameless Namekian was even stronger than Frieza. Once it becomes clear that the Z-Fighters cannot defeat the androids, Piccolo goes to Kami's lookout to fuse back into the Nameless Namekian.

As part of their fusion, Piccolo remains the dominant figure (despite acquiring some traits from Kami). Piccolo is described as having become a Super Namekian, and is significantly stronger than all the Saiyans before being trained in a hyperbolic time chamber for the Cell Games. Super Namekian Piccolo is a similar match for Android 17, and can probably kill an incomplete cell during their first fight. In the Cell games, Piccolo is the only character currently shown struggling in his Cell Junior battle.

Orange Piccolo fakes his own death to help Gohan awaken his animal form, and the two then perform a combined special beam cannon to kill Cell Max once and for all. as Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103, Orange Piccolo is now one of the most powerful warriors in the multiverse.
