8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard Review – Party like it's 1982
8BitDo's retro-flavored keyboards prove that gaming tech doesn't always have to be a dull black slab.
What makes the Xbox version of 8bitdo's mechanical keyboard different from what came before it is, for starters, that it's green. Not just any green, but a shade of green that gamers will instantly associate with the Xbox. Not just any Xbox, but the OG console released 23 years ago.
8bito unveils the Xbox version of its mechanical keyboard
Not compatible with any actual Xbox, but I'd like to see it anyway
If the shade of green alone wasn't enough to convince you that this latest 8bitdo offering is a tribute to the original Xbox, the right cursor keys are a dead giveaway. A break from the keyboard's otherwise all-green design, the arrow keys are made to look like the colorful buttons that adorned Xbox controllers for nearly 25 years. Yellow, blue, red, and a lighter shade of green than the rest of the keyboard, and in the same layout you'll find them on the Xbox controller.
Although the keyboard is Xbox-themed, and Xbox played a role in its creation, it is not compatible with any Xbox console. Only PCs with Windows 10 or higher or phones running Android 9.0 or newer. It also comes with a free month of PC Game Pass when its connection to Xbox prompts you to sign up. Or if you already have Game Pass, and I'm assuming people are probably tempted by this design, I'm assuming the free month can be tacked on to your current subscription.
8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition
8bitdo's retro mechanical keyboard is available in a variety of designs, some of which are inspired by classic consoles including the NES and Famicom. It connects via Bluetooth to a PC using Windows 10 and above and the two large buttons it comes with can be programmed to mimic your favorite key.
The 8bitdo Xbox keyboard isn't on sale for Black Friday, of course, because it hasn't been released yet. There are plenty of other places offering Xbox deals this weekend, though. Best Buy is giving away gift cards to anyone who buys the new Galaxy Black Series X, and the Xbox Store's Black Friday sale has tons of games available for less.
