Ever since Resident Evil Requiem left, people have been debating one tiny little detail at the end of the game: Leon Kennedy's wedding ring. The game never spells out that he's married, but it's pretty clear that he is—the question is, to whom? Some think it's Claire and she's carrying on the Redfield bloodline, others believe it's Ada Wong, and a surprising proportion believe it's Sherry, y'know, a girl she's known since childhood.
Others think it could be Ashley, or that we've never met before.
Nick Apostolides also doesn't know who Leon is married to, and refuses to pick a side because “half the fans want to hang me,” Doug Cockle was asked to choose between Yennefer and Trish, and he chose Shani. Director Koshi Nakanishi has been tight-lipped to say the least, but he did at least say that everything will be revealed in time.
“The answer will be clear in a few days, but not yet,” he said in an interview with Eurogamer. “What we wanted to convey in the final scene is simple: Leon now has a 'place to go home' to, and we hope you can imagine the peaceful moments he spent there.”
Leon Kennedy has “a place to go home to,” but to whom?
To offer my own two cents, I can't imagine Ada Wong, an international super spy with a sketchy background, as the type to settle down with her husband and enjoy some “peaceful moments,” but there's definitely chemistry between the two — more so than she does with Claire. Just go back and play Resident Evil 2, where Ada lets out a Darth Vader-worthy scream when she dies.
“Leon is a man who speaks very little about the things that really matter, but he will sacrifice himself without a second thought to save the life in front of him,” Nakanishi continued. “So what does his ring represent? Resolution? Or a vow? He can never speak the answer himself, but for now, having finished the long battle, he has a 'home to go to.' Isn't that enough?”
According to reputed leaker Dusk Golem, Ada Wong is set to appear in the upcoming Requiem DLC, so maybe we'll find out sooner than expected, or maybe Capcom will keep this secret close to its chest until a future game, leaving fans in a torturous limbo of speculation. Either way, it's good that Leon finally has some stability in his life after the horrors he's been through.
