All of the latest technologies are affected by the AI-driven global memory shortage in price and availability, and according to the new Xbox CEO, the upcoming Project Helix will be no different. The upcoming Xbox console was recently announced at GDC 2026 amid consumer concerns over rising tech prices.
Code-named Project Helix is the follow-up to Xbox's Series X|S, proposed as an ambitious move to define the home console and its limitations. Breaking from the standard console-specification norm, the VP of Next Generation Xbox shared that the AMD-powered Project Helix will not only play standard Xbox console games but will also have the ability to play PC games. To the excitement of many Xbox fans, it looks like these consoles will soon be in developer hands, as Microsoft has stated that dev kits will start rolling out in 2027. However, it's been a troubled time for consumers when it comes to tech and console pricing. The current AI craze has left memory in short supply, resulting in sky-high prices hitting store shelves. In response, current-gen consoles such as the Xbox Series X and PS5 have had to raise their prices to maintain market viability.

Xbox's Project Helix cannot escape the state of the hardware market
While Xbox's approach to the current state of the market does not mean that Project Helix will be able to escape the current hardware market, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has confirmed that memory costs will affect both the pricing and availability of the next-gen Xbox console. Sharma's statements come from a Game File interview with Stephen Totillo regarding the release of the next-gen Xbox and the transition to the current-gen Xbox Series X and S. However, it doesn't look like gamers should expect the worst from Xbox's Project Helix pricing. Sharma says that Xbox's main priority is to build the best console that can play PC games, so pricing, availability and launch time seem to be secondary considerations now due to the dynamic state of the world.
All this is an equation. Memory costs will affect pricing, affect availability. When thinking about where the world plays, we will consider this. So we are not ready to share the launch timeline right now. The world is very dynamic. My number one focus, though, is to focus on what we have control over, building the best console to play the best games, including your PC games.
What's more, the topic of the launch of Project Helix was also discussed in the interview, and unfortunately, there is still little from Xbox when its next console is expected to launch. Despite some speculation from The Game File that the next Xbox could launch as early as next year, Sharma still kept Project Helix's launch window under wraps. Instead, the Xbox CEO reiterated that development kits will launch next year and that early feedback on the upcoming console has been exciting for the Xbox team.
