Makashi Kishimoto, K producer Naruto The series has featured an abundance of incredibly interesting and fascinating villains over the years and they all come with different abilities up their sleeves. One of the most unique abilities Kishimoto gave his villains was the power of immortality. Especially within the ranks of the Akatsuki, Kishimoto granted both Hidan and Kakuzu the same power of immortality, but it was the former who assumed true immortality by worshiping the god Jashin.
At the end of his fight with Shikamaru Naruto Chapter 338, which officially came out in Weekly Shounen Jump issue #8 on February 05, 2007, officially buried Hidan forever, but many fans believed that he was still alive. As of now Boruto: Two Blue Vortexes era, for which the last chapter was released on May 20, 2026, Hidan is no longer alive, and this was directly confirmed by the author in a very popular and comprehensive data book called Kai no Sho, which was officially released on December 9, 2009.
The Naruto Guidebook Kai no Sho confirms that Hidan is no longer alive after the Shikamaru battle
Hidan is the most interesting villain in the world NarutoAnd one of the scariest. In terms of strength, he is not all that impressive despite his popularity. However, he was still strong enough to kill Asuma in battle and keep in touch with Matatabi, the Two Tails. Despite his immense strength, he ends up in a battle with Shikamaru, who, using his brilliant tactics, is able to cut him into pieces and then bury him deep underground in the Nara Forest. Having the power of immortality, he did not die even after being dismembered, and his head could clearly be seen talking. This led many of us to believe that he would survive to this day.
“All preparations are done now, we will begin the final agony.” – When Hidan kills Asuma, Naruto Chapter #321
Masashi Kishimoto's new comments in Kai no Sho, the official Naruto fan book, confirm once and for all that he is not alive in today's Boruto era. As is the case with many people in the world of Naruto, immortality comes in many forms. Hidan may have been incapacitated, but that doesn't mean he can't be dealt with in different ways, such as being nuked using Dust Release or some other method. According to the new data book, he eventually rotted to death.

After 12 years, Boruto officially brings back Sakura Haruno with a new character upgrade
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 34, released on May 20, 2026, brings back Sakura with a new heartwarming moment with her daughter Sarada.
Hidan could not survive without underground nourishment
Hidan's immortality is quite unique, as it presumably ensures that he will not age and at the same time, not die from any physical attack. He could be cut into a hundred pieces, and he would still not be dead, each individual piece having the ability to move. This makes Hidan an incredibly terrifying villain. But despite that, Hidan is not invincible and there are other ways he can be dealt with. One of them is starvation.
“He was still alive. But, like a normal human, he could still rot if he wasn't nourished.” – Kai no Show, December 9, 2009
After Hidan was cut up by Shikamaru and buried underground in the Nara Forest, he had no nourishment and eventually began to rot from extreme hunger and the rot that came with it. He could no longer live and eventually died, according to comments made on the Kai no Sho in 2009, which only recently resurfaced. Hidan's fate being certain definitely adds a new, unique twist to the story and elevates Shikamaru's own character tremendously. This tells us that Shikamaru was more than successful in avenging Asuma's death. At the same time, it also shows that when Shikhamaru sets his mind to it, even an immortal cannot stop him. It is precisely because of this that we fans can appreciate him as the interim 8th Hokage during the Boruto era.
“What I believe is the will of fire. However, your god is not Jashin-sama right now. It is me. I will judge you.” – Shikamaru after burying Hidan, Naruto Chapter #338

Why true immortality can only be achieved through the Rinnegan
Hidan gained immortality through his pact with Lord Jashin and all the worship and sacrifices he made to him. It is unclear what the mechanics are behind this immortality and who Jashin is in the grand scheme of things. However, what is clear is that Jashin granted Hidan the power of immortality, even though he died of decay and lack of nutrition. Interestingly, not all immortality is created equal in the Naruto world. Kakuzu's multiple lives are also said to be immortal, though in reality it is anything but that. The best version of immortality comes with the power of the Rinnegan.
I started with the Sharingan, but now I have the Rinnegan as well. Reincarnation, immortality, I have many options. – Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto Chapter #694
The Rinnegan is a very powerful dojutsu that essentially grants a control over life and death itself as we've experienced first hand through the Pen's Attack arc and all the other arcs that have followed. The Rinnegan can grant immortality through several methods, and the immortality that comes with this eye is far better than anything the Jashin can offer. Unlike Hidan, any user of the Rinnegan cannot suffer from a lack of nutrition due to their innate ability to extract chakra from all living things they come into contact with. Rinnegan users can absorb chakra from anyone they come into contact with, as seen in Naruto's battle against Nagato in chapter 551, which was officially released in Weekly Shonen Jump issue #47 on September 5, 2011.
As such, the Rinnegan completely blocks Jashin's weaknesses of immortality. Likewise, the Rinnegan can also aid in the process of regeneration, as confirmed by Sasuke. It can also steal a lifetime and essentially allows the user to play God himself. If there was to be a true immortal in the world of One Piece, it would have to be a powerful Rinnegan user. Interestingly, the strongest character in the entire Naruto universe, Shibai Otsutsuki, also had a Rinnegan on his forehead. He gained such great powers that he eventually shed his mortal body and became a true immortal who now exists on a completely different plane of existence.
