Shrink the troll, find the Telekinesis scroll, extend the bridge, and get the focus from the Troll Canyon in Gothic 1 Remake.
How to start Focus on Mountain Fortress in Gothic 1 Remake
Focus on Mountain Fortress is available during Focus Stones, the main quest that Saturus gives you after completing the Water Mages scheme. Before going after any of the Focus Stones, you must first visit the tower that Diego marked on your map when he gave you the Water Mage plan.
When you reach that tower, talk to the NPCs there to mark the location of the Focus Stones on your in-game map. This conversation also causes companion NPCs to move to their designated focus stone locations.
Where to find the Mountain Fortress
Mountain Fortress is southeast of the old camp. If you visited Diego's marked tower before setting off, the Focus Stone location should already be marked on your in-game map. However, you can use the map above to find the fort if needed.
When you reach the Mountain Fortress, you'll find Lester waiting in front of a bridge that leads to it. Talk to him to get a warning about the golem ahead.
There are dangerous enemies in and around the Mountain Fortress, including Harpies. Make sure you have some healing items on hand and save the manual before attempting to cross the bridge.
How to beat the golem on the bridge
Lester will warn you that the golem blocking the bridge can only be damaged with blunt weapons, and you should equip something like a mace or club if you have one handy. Don't worry if you don't have access to a blunt weapon, though, you can still get through the fight by letting Lester do most of the work.
In fact, Lester's mace can damage the golem, and it won't take long to bring it down. Just focus on capturing the Golem and staying alive, and let Lester take care of the crime. Once the golem is defeated, continue across the bridge and follow the winding path towards the Mountain Fortress, dispatching the Harpies along the way.
How to reach Mountain Fortress Library
After entering the Mountain Fortress, go forward and go through the first door on your right. Climb the stairs, then go through the opening on your right to reach the outer walkway. Follow that walkway, re-enter the fort through the door on your left, and continue up the stairs.
You will soon reach a room with a headless marble statue and paintings on the wall. Go into the next room, which is the dining room, and notice the large painting on the wall. It gives you the solution to the bookshelf puzzle in the library.
How to solve the Mountain Fortress Bookshelf Puzzle
A large painting in the dining room shows a sea creature eating a wolf, and a wolf eating a molerat. This sequence provides a solution to the bookshelf puzzle in the library, as it centers around interacting with the bookshelves in the correct order. Each bookshelf has a creature statue on top, and you must interact with them in the order shown in the picture:
- Sea creature bookshelf
- The Wolf Bookshelf
- The Mollerat bookshelf
After interacting with the bookshelves in that order, a hidden door in the corner will open. Crouch through the opening, climb the stairs to your right, and follow the path to the stairs used to reach the attic. From there, go through the attic to the room below.
Where to find a locked chest in Mountain Fortress
After falling from the attic, turn around. The door behind you leads to a locked chest, and while you can complete Focus on the Mountain Fortress without opening it, the chest contains a suit of Royal Guard armor. If you want to claim that wearable, you need to track the chest key.
You can only reach the chest key location if you learn how to climb the walls. You can train that ability as part of Aiming High, a side quest that comes from Theron in the swamp camp, and if you don't have it you should ignore the Mountain Fortress locked chest.
Where to find the locked chest key in Mountain Fortress
To find the key to the locked chest, start from the room you left from the attic. Go through the door in the room, climb the stairs, and continue to the end, where you'll find an opening in the wall.
If you've learned how to climb walls, you'll get a wall climbing prompt when you reach the edge of that opening. Press the input that appears and climb up and to the left to find another opening. Go through that opening, go right, and climb the stairs to reach an inner area with a pair of Harpies.
After defeating those enemies, use the outer walkway with stairs to continue upwards. A locked chest containing a key is at the top of the stairs, closer to more harpies, and you must pick its lock. For more information on lockpicking, see our How to Lockpick guide.
If you are really struggling with chest, try this lockpick solution. Since lock solutions vary based on your lockpicking training, it is difficult to provide a universal sequence, so a specific one is not offered here.
How to get Royal Guard Armor
After looting the key from the chest at the top of the tower, climb down the wall and return to the locked chest in the room under the attic. Use the key to open the chest and claim the Royal Guard Armor inside.
Again, this armor isn't necessary to complete the focus on Mountain Fortress, and you don't need to worry if you don't have wall climbing ability and can't get it. However, if you can climb the walls, you can also pick up the Royal Guard Armor while in the Mountain Fortress.
How to find the Focus Stone in the Mountain Fortress
After opening the locked chest or deciding to skip it, return to the room you left from the attic and go to the opening in the wall. Look down and to your right to find a focus stone below, then climb down. Now, defeat the harpies that appear and interact with the stone to get the focus from the Mountain Fortress.
How to get back to Leicester
After collecting the focus from the Mountain Fortress, head back to the opening you passed earlier. About halfway up, look to your right and drop onto the outdoor walkway that wraps around the tower.
This is the same outer walkway that you used when you first entered the fort. Follow it back to the path you took earlier to return to the room with the bookshelf puzzle, where Lester should still be waiting.
How to complete Focus on Mountain Fortress
After talking to Lester, you can leave the Mountain Fortress and return to Saturas when you're ready. Winding through the Mountain Fortress to Focus completes the quest and advances the Focus Stones.
