Goku Black is actually a version of Zamasu from a future timeline where Goku's powers make him realize that mortals are getting too strong. Already imbued with a deep hatred of humanity, Zamasu forced Juno to tell him everything about Goku, gathered the Super Dragon Balls, and switched bodies with him.
Now Goku Black instead of Zamasu, he kills Goku inside his old body and begins systematically wiping out every Supreme Kai to kill the Gods of Destruction linked to them. Goku Black then uses the Time Ring to do the exact same thing in Future Trunks' timeline before personally terrorizing the youth for meddling in divine affairs.
