The Gothic Remake physical console version requires a sneaky day-one patch
X user DoesItPlay1 reported on May 22 that the physical release Gothic 1 Remake Not playable out of the box. They confirmed the claim with a screenshot of an error message saying “unable to check game state” and asking the player to make sure they are connected to the internet. Gothic 1 Remake does not require always-online
The official GothicTheGame X account responded to the report four hours after it began circulating on social media, stating that physical copies of the game are not playable out of the box because the initial build was the only way to ensure that their buyers would be able to play on day one. The same statement confirmed that the mandatory download will be around 5GB in size, equivalent to around 8% of the installation size of the unpatched game version. While inconvenient, the requirement is a one-time issue, with THQ Nordic noting that the remake will not have an always-online requirement. Instead, the full game will be playable offline after downloading the day-one patch.
