Great horror games despite the frustrating combat

Horror games offer some of the most exciting, atmospheric experiences that players can find on shelves today. Unfortunately, among these gems, there are some titles that thrive on their setting and atmosphere, but fall short in terms of combat.

The start of an avant garde horror JRPG series

Koudelka is an excellent horror JRPG, celebrating the works of Gothic masters like Mary Shelley and the eldritch tales of Lovecraft. It is a unique JRPG in many ways, and so are its subsequent series, Shadow heartsEach title hosts multiple endings and an overarching story of mysticism and occult magic.

JRPG combat is the slowest in this game, with fights often taking a while due to tanky enemies and some slow animations that can slow down the pace of this otherwise great game.

A great sci-fi horror title that is riddled with enemies

hunting Out of Arkane Studios is an impressive, engaging sci-fi horror title that has a lot going for it in terms of its environment design and overall story. Talos 1 may be a small place, but it's full of personality.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the game's combat, which disappointed many with its lack of weight and impact, along with a shallow variety of useful weapons and enemy placements.

Fighting can take away from an otherwise great atmosphere

But it's the weightless combat in this solid, unconventional title that fails to leave an impression – while combat isn't the main focus of the game, it's unavoidable for the most part, and players will find almost all forms of combat frustratingly ineffective. Get a feel for this title.
