Key takeaways
- Killzone developer Guerrilla Games has claimed that it is now “done” with the series moving to Horizon.
- After the release of Killzone: Shadowfall, the studio wanted to create something completely different for the series in an effort to “refresh the palette”.
- That doesn't mean Killzone is dead, just that we can't get it from Guerrilla. Yes, I know what I'm dealing with.
Killzone is just one of many franchises that the PlayStation has locked away in the massive vault, alongside the likes of Jak & Daxter, Infamous, and Sly Cooper, never to be rescued from the PS3 again. Despite the company's insistence on following the live service Gray Train (in some cases disastrously), PlayStation doesn't seem to want to pull its established FPS series Killzone out of storage and give it another spin.
Even original developer Guerrilla Games – which has moved on to bigger and better things with the Horizon series – has given no indication that it wants to work on a brand new entry in the series, and the studio seems happy to leave. Hit back for good. In a recent interview with The Washington Post (thanks Pushsquare) regarding the upcoming release of LEGO Horizon Adventure, art director Roy Postma claimed that Guerrilla is “done” with Killzone as a team.
Killzone developer “finished” with the Guerrilla series
Speaking about the Horizon series from an artistic perspective, Post explains that Guerrilla wanted to create something completely opposite to Killzone in terms of tone and story, which later led to the creation of Horizon Zero Dawn.
“We're done with it [Killzone] As a team,” she says in the post. “As a studio, we needed to refresh the palette. It was, by choice, the opposite of Killzone. I think the themes that this story and the characters represent are relatable to all ages and people, like meeting friends family and finding your place in the world.”
Of course, that doesn't mean Killzone is completely dead as a series, just that we almost certainly won't be getting a new one from Guerrilla Games anytime soon. PlayStation has several studios that have experience with first-person shooters, plus Bungie likes to oversee things. There's always the chance that the franchise could move to another developer while Guerrilla focuses on Horizon.
We know Guerrilla is all over Horizon as well, with both the Horizon Zero Dawn remaster releasing at the end of the month, and Lego Horizon Adventures releasing in November. We also know that the studio is working on a multiplayer Horizon spin-off, which is strongly rumored to be an MMO, so there's plenty for Guerrilla to work on. At any rate, too much to worry about reviving Killzone.
