League of Legends will return the popular winter map this year

If the Christmas season brings you joy, treats and hopefully deep discounts on your favorite games, it's Christmas-themed twists on your favorite video games.

Whether it's the presents delivered by Santa Claus himself in Stardew Valley or seeing Zombie Santa and Vermin take to the skies in Nuketown, there's a lot to love about the holidays and gaming. For years, those celebrations also included League of Legends and its popular winter map. However, this has not happened for the past seven years.

Well, that's about to change this holiday season, as winter maps are set to return.

The winter map is equal parts melancholy and festive

In a new video shared on YouTube titled “Important Message from Pablo,” League of Legends Executive Producer, Paul 'Pabro' Belleza shared that the Winter map is returning with patch 25.23.

“We know a lot of you have been asking about the winter map, and why we couldn't do it,” Belleza said. “And I'm telling you, it's really hard. Our techniques and tools need some work. Hand-drawing everything and the map itself is a lot of effort. And not to mention that there's gameplay clarity. …

“Since you really asked for it, we're going to do it anyway. The winter map is coming back, everyone. … It's winter everywhere in Summoner's Rift.”

The video ends with a glimpse of some holiday-themed assets. Oh, and it's worth mentioning that Belleza's entire monologue happened while she was making snow fairies, which is a pretty neat touch.

Already on the LoL subreddit, fans began celebrating the news of the long-awaited return. “Idgaf if it's cheesy to say, but it makes me a little nostalgic for the day,” read one of the top comments. Yes, we are with you. Welcome back, Winter Maps, we missed you.
