Nintendo gives fans their first official look at the new Switch Joy-Con

Nintendo quietly revealed that going forward, the Joy-Con sold in Europe will have Phillips (cross-head) screws instead of Y-head screws. These updated Joy-Con will end in model number (-01). Nintendo said the change will allow users to officially replace the controller's battery themselves. The company also shared a step-by-step guide on how to replace the Joy-Con controller's battery with an official replacement kit, which will come with all the necessary tools. Nintendo confirmed that the changes were made to comply with EU battery regulations that will come into effect in February 2027. To clarify, this change is the Joy-Con for the original Switch, which is compatible with the Switch 2.

Nintendo has revealed that the updated Joy-Con controllers in Neon Blue (left) and Neon Red (right) will be available from the Nintendo Store starting July 16. Additional colors will be released at various intervals throughout the year, though the company did not elaborate further. A Joy-Con battery replacement kit will be available as a separate purchase from the Nintendo Store at a later date. The controller update in Europe arrived on September 1 before the price of the Switch 2 went up from $449.99 to $499.99 before taxes and fees are applied.
