Giving free upgrades to older games is nothing new. Devs have often announced free next-gen upgrades and even completed version upgrades for some older games. Obsidian had announced that he was going to do this in reference to the outside world. The 2019 title received a sequel last year, so it looks like loyal fans will be rewarded.
At least that's what Obsidian said on his forum on April 30th. “If you have the base version of Outer Worlds in your library before May 27, you'll get Spacer's Choice Edition for free. That's right, free! It's for all platforms that Spacer's Choice Edition is on,” however, it did.
Fans of The Outer Worlds won't get the promise of a free upgrade
As noted in a post by FootballRacing38 on Reddit , it appears that Obsidian either forgot or deliberately changed their decision to give away the select version of the spacer for free. “About three weeks ago, Obsidian clearly announced that if you bought the original Outer Worlds before May 27, you would get the Spacer version for free on May 27. However, they recently announced that this is not the case and that you need to buy both dlcs as well,” they said.
What's more, the Obsidian Support X channel said, “Due to unforeseen platform limitations, Xbox One and PS4 digital owners will need to own both DLCs to be eligible for the upgrade.” There's no word on what these unforeseen circumstances are, but it's not what Obsidian promised back in April.
The initial offer seemed like a great way for those who played the base game to experience the DLC for free. However, it now looks like that won't be possible for previous-gen consoles for whatever reason. Maybe Obsidian wasn't okay with anyone playing free DLC. Regardless, fans feel cheated of what has happened.
