Crimson Desert is one of the most anticipated and ambitious games of 2026, and for many players, it more than delivers. Despite significant flaws at release, Pearl Abyss has released ten major updates in just three short months, with many patches dropped in the early weeks. Although it's a single-player experience, the frequency of updates more closely mirrors what you can expect from a live-service title, harkening back to Pearl Abyss' experience operating in the Black Desert.
I spoke with Will Powers during Summer Game Fest to dig deeper into the team's breakneck update pace, its design philosophy, and plans to bring gameplay parity to characters like Damiane and Oongka.
The art of listening to your players
Before the conversation began, there was a silent question hovering in the air, which the community kept wondering: How is Pearl Abyss rolling out these updates so quickly? Well, it's in the company's DNA at this point, thanks to years of experience developing Black Desert.
Crimson Desert may be a single-player experience developed by a separate team, but the core principles apply across games. “The DNA of the company is inherently a live service. So, it's a single-player game, although that doesn't change the core identity of who the developers are and how they want to support the community,” Powers tells me.
To put this into perspective, the team at Black Desert has released a weekly update for over 11 years. With that kind of precedent, it's no wonder that the team at Crimson Desert has been so quick to respond to player feedback with a series of rapid-fire updates, from bug fixes to big quality-of-life changes, like improving the storage system.
So how do they decide which response to act on? Powers isn't quick to give away the team's secrets, but he did offer a behind-the-scenes look at the development. “We listen carefully to every piece of feedback we're given, but maintain the DNA of what the game is about,” says Power. “That's incredibly important because you can very easily listen to vocal minorities and let them shape the game and lose the core of the game again.”
Although he wouldn't offer specifics, Powers was clear that the team reviews feedback from multiple sources, so if you want to write them a letter, your feedback could find its way into a future update.
Bright future for Damiane, Oongka, and Crimson Desert DLC
Another reason why Pearl Abyss is so quick to address player concerns is that many of them are already aligned with internal emotions. However, now that the key issues have been addressed, Powers explains how the studio is working on its own vision for what's to come. “I think the impression of early post-launch development was very reactionary. It's us taking back control.”
On June 2, Pearl Abyss released the Q3 roadmap, detailing the major updates we can expect to see added by September. However, there are no hard dates set, as the team could be ready ahead of schedule, which wouldn't surprise me based on the sizzling update pace so far. “If they want to develop stuff faster, I'm going to stop them,” Power says. Pearl Abyss' primary focus remains on releasing updates when they are ready rather than hitting specific deadlines.
Among the exciting changes planned in the roadmap, Damian and Ongka's names stand out, as these party members have been largely overshadowed by Cliff. Players have struggled to justify playing as Oongka or Damiane on the cliff due to their obvious limitations, such as the lack of abilities needed to solve puzzles. “Gameplay parity is the ultimate goal,” Powers specifies. So while we may not see Damian or Ongka wrestle the title of hero away from the cliff, all three characters will be on their toes when it comes to experiencing the world and its various puzzles.
While changes to Damiane, Oongka, and key cutscenes are some of the most exciting updates on the roadmap, there's something even bigger on the horizon: DLC. So far, we have only received UpdatesAnd no matter how big the overhauls are, the DLC promises more than those updates, according to Powers. “It's going to be very different, whether it's in scope, scale, size, it's going to be different. What that means beyond that, we're not talking about yet.”
Crimson Desert is constantly evolving and growing. By adding baby wyvern mounts that can fly almost anywhere or expanding main characters like Damiane and Oongka, Pearl Abyss refuses to let yesterday's missteps become tomorrow's failures.
Its commitment to constant updates has set the tone for a rapidly evolving single-player experience that is redefining our expectations. They've already added unexpected treats, like a pinball machine, so there's no telling what other surprises may be in store.
