For the first time since September 2016, Nintendo Not hosted live for the month of September. There was the Nintendo Partner Showcase and Indie World in August, but neither showcase revolved around Nintendo's line-up of upcoming games. Why there wasn't, is anyone's guess – but it may not have been anything to show the company has been very busy behind the scenes with the upcoming reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 taking place before March. 31, 2025.
That's not to say that there won't be a Nintendo Direct before the end of the year, but for whatever reason, Nintendo hasn't been able to host one in the month that it's debuted a major show for the past 8 years in a row. Last September's Nintendo Direct was then the 2023 one, where Nintendo showed games like the expected remake. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year DoorPrincess Peach Showtimeand the second wave of Splatoon 3 DLC, among many, many others.
In theory, Nintendo could shadow-drop Nintendo Direct on September 30. This story will be updated in that case; However, it feels incredibly unlikely at this point. If Nintendo did, that would make it the latest live release date of September when most of them took place in the middle of the month.
Traditionally, these Nintendo Directs are the last major showcase of the year for the Big N. There are events like Indie World, Mobile Direct, or Direct Yesterday for Super Nintendo World, but not the main first-party demo. . Maybe Indie World in August would make room for the big Nintendo Direct later this year, but that's pure speculation. All fans can do now is wait for Nintendo to come forward and announce an event, if this will be the course of the year. It's unlikely that there won't be some sort of major first-party Nintendo Direct this year, but that's officially uncharted territory.

The last without a Nintendo Direct was in September 2015, meaning this year's absence breaks an 8-year streak of events. Of course, if Nintendo wasn't ready for one, it wouldn't make sense for the company to force September to tick like a box. Nintendo could return to normal next year as well in September 2025, but it will be more doubtful than the last 8 years.
Of all the possible explanations, the most important one is that Nintendo is completely ahead in the preparation of Nintendo Switch 2. Fans can be forgiving in that case, as many of the Switch 2 leaks are incredibly promising. Time will tell, but at least in Nintendo's history this time is over.
