Key takeaways
- One of the best replacements for Dockside Extortionist is the Ancient Tomb, generating two mana at the cost of two life.
- Suspended for repeated use, use Rousing Refrain to add red mana based on the opponent's hand size.
- Consider cards like Pyretic Ritual, Ragavan, or Jesca's Will for alternative mana generation in a Commander deck.
Magic: The Gathering's Commander was rocked by a series of bans that had players scrambling to replace cards in their decks. The four banned cards were the Jeweled Lotus; mind crypt; Nadu, winged wisdom; And finally, the dockside robber. If you want to test your magical knowledge and are looking for a replacement card, we have been too, so we have come up with these cards.

Magic: The Gathering – The Best Preconstructed Commander Decks
We take a look at several of the best MTG Precon decks for the Commander format.
The problem with trying to replace the Dockside Extrusionist was to keep in mind that it was often a combo piece that did a very specific thing. If you're playing it repeatedly to generate infinite or near-infinite mana, you can't do much to replace it. But if you are using it for some extra mana at your opponents expense, then these cards can be a good choice.
10 Ancient tombs
Probably the best option but…
Your best bet for trying to replace Dockside Extortionist is just one land, and the best land for that is Ancient Graveyard. This land generates two generic mana when you tap it at the cost of paying two life. The problem with Ancient Tombs is that it's kind of boring.
Playing a good land in place of an explosive creature or wild combo is a realistic choice, but not in the spirit of this format.
9 The rousing refrain
Play the long game
If you don't need mana right away, you can try playing Rosing Refrain in your deck. This card adds one red mana for each card in your opponent's hand, and you won't lose that mana as you go through phases and phases.
Once you cast it, it suspends itself with counters three times, so you get it three more turns. You can suspend it yourself for two mana, multiple times on your fifth turn to get all that mana.
8 Birgi, God of Storytelling // Hornfell, Horn of Bounty
Generate more and more minds
The best cards in Commander are the ones that do a lot for small mana, which is what made Dockside Extrusionist so good. With God Birgi out, you can continue to generate more and more mana with each spell you cast.
When you cast a spell, you'll add one red mana, which doesn't disappear as you move between phases. Birgi does many other things, but the most relevant ability is always generating mana with her spells. She's especially good when used in combos (like with Grinning Ignus) so you never run out of mana.
7 Pyretic rituals
A simple swap
Perhaps the easiest swap would be a ritual spell like Pyretic Ritual. This mana positive spell costs two mana like Dockside Extortionist, and generates three mana for you, giving you an extra mana.
While one mana by itself is nowhere near the amount that Dockside generates, it can be enough to get you to cast your Commander early, and when using a card like Birgi, you're netting two more mana than you spend. This, making for a good trade off.
6 Simian Spirit Guide
A single use monkey
If you just need one more mana to cast your game-changing spell, you might want to consider using Simian Spirit Guide. If your deck is both red and green, you can also use Elvis Spirit Guide, a green creature with the same effect. This rather odd creature lets you banish it from your hand to generate one red mana.
You can only do this once, and since you're in Commander, you can't rely on it being in your starting hand. That said, it may be enough to give you an edge over your opponents.
5 The curse of opulence
How long can you live with a curse?
This one mana spell comes down earlier than Dockside Extrusionist, but has the ability to generate more mana. Aishwarya's Curse is a spell that enchants a player, when that player is attacked, you get to make Gold Tokens.
Gold Tokens are the prototype of Treasure Tokens, but you don't have to tap them to use their mana generating abilities. Curse of Prosperity lets you generate mana when your opponents attack each other, so you get your gold tokens on turns that aren't your own.
4 landing on Avernus
Everyone is going down
A surprisingly powerful option for your deck could be Battle for Baldur's Gate Enchantment, Landing on Avernus. This three-mana enchantment doesn't do anything immediately, but puts a tight watch on the game if your opponents can't do anything about it.
At your repair, you place two descent counters on the spell. So, each player gets treasure tokens equal to the number of counters on it and takes a lot of damage. Even though everyone is getting mana, you can deal huge damage to your opponents in some modes.
3 Fable of the Mirror-Breaker//Kiki-Jiki's Reflection
A saga for the ages
Much better than it was restricted to Standard, Fable of the Mirror is a fantastic spell that can change your own game in your favor. For three mana you get Saga and a 2/2 Goblin Shaman token that creates a Treasure token when attacking.
Then you can start generating mana with smart attacks from the goblins, plus you'll filter your hand a bit in the second chapter. Once you flip Fable to Kiki-Jiki's reflection, you get another Goblin Shaman, this lets you make copies of creatures you don't control, rushing them but forcing you to sacrifice them in the next turn.
2 Ragavan, Nimble Pilfer
The danger itself
Quite possibly the best creature to replace Dockside Extrusionist with is Ragavan, the Nimble Pilferer. Any time this one mana creature connects with a player, it creates a Treasure token, while also banishing the top card of their library. You can cast that card this turn, so not only do you get a treasure token, you get a free card.
Alternatively, you can dash it for two mana, you let it cast hastily, an opponent who is wide open, and then bounce it into your hand at the end of your turn.
1 Jessica's wish
Probably the best
In terms of explosive mana generation, perhaps the best way to generate a lot of mana at once is with Jeska's Will. For three mana you must choose one of two modes on this spell. Either you:
- Add one red mana for each card in target opponent's hand.
- Banish the top three cards of your library. You can play them this turn.
You cast Sol's Bell or Ancient Tomb on your first turn, then you can cast Jesca's Will on your second turn as long as you have a red resource, you can make five, six, or even seven mana. The opponent has not cast any spells yet. For a single card, Jesca's Will is probably the closest you can get to pure mana generation from Dockside Extrusionist.
