The ultimate Defense Academy option is to “dramatically” change the story

Key takeaways

  • The upcoming game, The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, will have a system similar to Danganronpa's affection-building mechanics.
  • Romance options in the new game can be sent in post-game mode, like in Danganronpa.
  • Player choices have a significant impact on the story and outcome, creating a flexible, open-world-like scenario.

The Danganronpa series has built a cult status over the years, making it one of the most beloved visual novel series in gaming.

While the series hasn't had a new game in over seven years now, creator Kazutaka Kodaka has been busy working on a range of other titles, including World's End Club and Master Detective Archives: Rain Code.

His next title, The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, is due for release in April 2025 and combines strategic RPG gameplay with visual novel elements. Before its launch, at the Tokyo Game Show, we asked Kodaka-san if the game offers more romance options than its Danganronpa predecessors.

“It will have the same system as Danganronpa.”

Danganronpa doesn't have a romance system. The games allow you to build affection with your fellow characters, but nothing really ends in a canonical romance. It looks like Hundred Lines: The Last Defense Academy is going down the same path.

At the event, when I asked if the game would have some kind of romance system, Kodaka-san told me, “It will have a system similar to Danganronpa where you can grow affection between characters.” So, while he doesn't explicitly say if there will be romance options in the game, it's likely that, at best, they'll be relegated to post-game mode.

During our chat at the Tokyo Game Show, Kodaka-san also discussed how the choice of protagonist Takumi affects the outcome of the game, saying, “The story changes dramatically and is completely different depending on the player, so the scenario unfolds freely, just like in an open world. .”

As in an open world, the landscape unfolds freely.

Kodaka-san was also eager to tell me what makes The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy different from his other games. He said the title would have a “strong emphasis on scenarios” and that they had partnered with a development company “specializing in tactical RPGs to fit the wargame theme”.
