Hyperkin kicked off CES 2025 by revealing a new controller for Xbox and PC called The Competitor.
-
The competitor looks similar to the PS5's DualSense, in a black and white color scheme and clear buttons.
-
It also has symmetrical thumbsticks that set it apart from many other Xbox controllers.
The difference between each new Xbox and PlayStation console is so minimal at this point that anything that potentially makes it better than the other can seriously contribute to winning generations. This gen, DualSense is the biggest difference between the PS5 and Xbox Series X, and now the Xbox has its own DualSense. Well, sort of.
CES 2025 is underway which means a lot of video game hardware and accessories will be revealed over the next few days. Hyperkin kicked off its CES week with a reveal competitor (Thanks, IGN), not only is the name of a controller because it's designed with competitive play in mind, but it's also an Xbox controller that looks, and probably feels, like the PS5's DualSense.

It's 2025 and Hyperkin released a new Guitar Hero controller for the Wii
Someone must have asked this, right?
To be clear, the Hyperkin is a third-party controller, so even though it's designed specifically with Xbox and PC in mind, it's not a controller made by Xbox. It would have been a very controversial creation due to the similarities between the competitor's and DualSense's designs. Not only does it have a black and white color scheme, but the d-pad and analog sticks are nearly identical, and so would the face buttons if they didn't need to have Xbox letters instead of PlayStation shapes.
Hyperkin has revealed an Xbox controller that looks a lot like the DualSense
Introducing the contestants, ladies and gentlemen
Speaking of sticks, aside from the fact that the controller looks like a DualSense, the biggest difference between this and a regular Xbox controller is the placement of the sticks. They are not symmetrical like they are on regular Xbox controllers. Useful for those used to playing games on the PlayStation or jumping between the PlayStation and Xbox and dealing with the difference in stick placement when it bothers you.
The competitor has a negative side It doesn't have haptic feedback or adaptive triggersArguably two features that set DualSense apart. However, it has nothing on DualSense – Hall effect sticks and triggers. Hall effect sticks use magnetic components that provide consistent resistance and, perhaps more importantly considering the issues in recent years, make controllers less prone to drift. Here's hoping Nintendo's next Joy-Con, images of which appeared to be leaked over the weekend, uses Hall Effect technology to avoid any drift issues in its next-gen.
