“Gensu“A fitting title for an Isekai
-
The Winter 2025 anime season is underway, and one of its most anticipated premieres is an original anime by MAPPA, the animation production studio behind many popular anime titles, including Attack on Titan: The Final Season, Jujutsu Kaisen, Heaven of Hell: Jigokuraku, Dorohedoro and The chainsaw man. Gensu follows a talented young animator who is in a rut after the resounding success of his directorial debut, and the series' teaser trailers have sparked a lot of interest in the show, which premiered on Sunday, January 5.
Title “Gensu“Might sound cool to non-Japanese speakers, but won't really carry much meaning, but the connection between the anime's title and its content is quite interesting, but also rather straightforward.

Zenshu: A Millennium Burnout Isekai Adventure
Are spoiled clams the secret to unlocking your abilities? (No. No, they're not.) Natsuko Hirose is about to find out in the series premiere of Zenshu.
What is ZENSHU?
Not just another Isekai
Gensu Natsuko follows Hirose, who became an animator immediately after high school, and very quickly climbed the ranks to become a director on an animation production project. The project was a mega hit, earning local and international acclaim, and made Natsuko a household name. The first anime was so successful that when she went on to direct another highly anticipated anime, a romantic comedy adaptation titled “Hatsukoi: First Love”, it was widely believed that another masterpiece of animation would be born.
However, production slowed down as Natsuko was unable to create storyboards for the project due to the fact that she never experienced her first love. While eating lunch at work, Natsu collapses and dies as a result of overwork, and wakes up in the world of another anime he worked on in his life, a depressing fantasy called “A Tale of Perishing”. Can life in a horror world reconnect Natsuko with her passion for art and animation?

Why the title fits
“Gensu“A fitting title for an Isekai
Because it's called an anime series Gensu It's something that's addressed very quickly in the first episode, and it sticks out quite a bit. In the early parts of Gensu Episode 1, Natsuko walks us through her best career as an animator so far, and tries to work on the storyboard for “HATSUKOI”. While she is trying to work, one of her co-workers presents work for a PV for her current project and after quickly flipping through the entire project, Natsuko hands the folder back to her co-worker and says one word: “zenshu”.
The title drop in episode 1 gives us a straightforward explanation for the series title, which is written in Japanese 全修, the first kanji being “Zenbeing used in the sense of “all”, and “Shu“, which is the root of the word “Shuri“, means “repair”, but is also the main kanji used in words.Shushi” 修士, meaning “master degree”. So, in this case, instead of “repair”, “remaster“?
The result? “Genshu”, meaning “fix them”. [the animation cels] All” – Natsuko was saying that they had to redo the entirety of the PV. Interestingly, after watching the previous work produced by their studio while eating lunch, Natsuko would die from too much work, and find himself living off the “. A Tale of Perishing” and interfering with the set story, effectively “redoing” it. Lately, of the “isekai” type. An adventure where a main character is, by some mechanic, brought into the world of one of their favorite pieces of media or One with which they are more involved, growing up (eg Dragon Ball Reincarnated as Yamacha manga, My Next Life as a Villain: All Roads Lead to Doom!Or this season The old man is reborn as a villain). The series is not just “a tale of perishing,” but a renewal of the artist's connection to his greatest passion.
ZENSHU is available on Crunchyroll. New episodes are released on Sundays.
