World of Warcraft's most played class takes one step forward, two steps back at midnight

After several rounds of alpha testing for World of WarcraftOf the Midnight expansion, Blizzard has finally released a beta that players who purchased the expansion's Epic Edition can play and experience regardless of invitation. While playing through new storylines and areas can be tempting, there are obviously spoilers for doing so. However, fans can still join World of Warcraft’s Midnight Beta and experience something completely new – reworked and rebalanced classes for Demon Hunters, along with a new Devourer space. With the so-called “pruning” of abilities at midnight, each class and imagination has fewer tools to toy with, which can be a blessing and a curse.

World of WarcraftThe abilities removed in Midnight serve the purpose of simplifying the gameplay loop and reducing mental stress. This has its pros and cons, with some fans liking what has been done with the various classes so far, and others saying the game is too easy now, with a much lower skill ceiling at higher levels. In particular, Midnight's excellent pruning and recent beta patch notes and changes make it clear that the paladin class is one step forward, two steps back.

According to data, the Paladin is the most played class in the retail World of Warcraft.

Say goodbye to the paladin world of Warcraft you know

There are a few reasons World of Warcraft Paladins are in a strange position at Midnight, even stranger than some other classes. These are:

  • Vengeance Paladin:

    • There is no longer any passive Holy Power generation, which dramatically changes the gameplay loop and general feel of the class. Divine Toll no longer casts free Justice, for example, and instead, it empowers your next Justice casts. With a lower overall power output, the Speak can feel a little slower and clunkier, even though it's more streamlined.

    • Herald of the Sun can now advance Templar as a hero tree, which could be interesting since the latter dominates most of The War Windin.

    • New World of Warcraft Apex Talents for Retribution Paladin include a special attack called Art of War, whose animation is simply a wave of light in a cone, similar to the old Light of Dawn. Some fans are upset that it lacks a punch, and decent damage is all but guaranteed now that the damage meters in the beta are still missing.

    • Finally, Retribution Paladins received a massive 11% damage nerf across the board in the latest beta patch notes for Midnight. wowAnd that was the only change made to the imagination. This is likely to compensate for the added damage to melee auto-attacks for all classes, which was a big and welcome change for paladins instead.

  • Holy Paladin:

    • World of Warcraft Cut barriers to healers at midnight, so Holy Paladins can no longer use Rebuke.
    • Divine Toll and Holy Prism are in a choice node, which is sad for the spec, as both were used consistently across the board. This adds to the sense of extreme pruning in this particular case.

    • The silver lining is that Light of Dawn is no longer hard-capped at 5 targets, and instead, it now heals all allies within 40 yards. This can be a huge buff for Holy Paladins wow Midnight Raid.

    • Holy Paladins gained a potentially very good Apex Talent with Bacon of the Savior, but unfortunately it was weakened in the current patch by making its Absorption Shield 50% less powerful.

    • The healing done in the latest patch has been reduced by 5%.

    • A new talent called Armory of the Light gives players the option of using 1-handed weapons and 2-handed shields, and still has a chance to parry incoming physical attacks. It could also be great for cosmetic options and gameplay. However, using a 2-handed weapon makes it impossible to use Shield of the Righteous, which is often woven into the rotation of Holy Paladins in TWW, and possibly even with Midnight removing a lot of buttons.

  • Protection Paladin:

    • The biggest change to Protection Paladin is that Consecration is no longer a mandatory tool for protection, as class mastery is no longer tied to a character standing in dedication. This is a nice change, and it makes the gameplay more comfortable.

    • Word of Glory no longer offers a block chance, and with the loss of various tools like Eye of Tyr, Moment of Glory, and Bastion of Light, the spike can feel even more. Protection Paladin was already the tank with the most survivability issues, so this doesn't help.

    • Since there is no passive Holy Power generation, players must be more careful when using their Divine Stade ability, as the new Valiant Crusade talent grants the effects of Shield of the Righteous for 4 seconds during and after Divine Stade. This means that one must either have the holy power to shield the righteous or the divine steed must be prepared ahead of time accordingly.

Why World of Warcraft's paladin class can't stick a midnight landing

These aren't necessarily bad changes in a vacuum, but considering the current state of The War Within, these are often dramatic departures from existing playstyles, or at least, them. Retribution Paladin is already considered to be the easiest damage spec in the game along with Beast Mastery Hunter, so the added chop and a dull feel with no passive holy power could reinforce this idea. World of WarcraftWho's meta remains to be seen for now, and things may change, but Vengeance overall looks like a middle-of-the-pack spec.

On the other hand, Holy Paladin is still going through major design changes in Midnight, with new talents like Armory of the Light being added and other abilities and passives constantly changing. This could be a sign of a bigger problem, as the identity of the class as a conflict healer may change in some shape or form. likewise, World of WarcraftWhile tank specs can be more successful when they rely less on healers, and with less defensive cooldowns and a holy power generator that pre-casts (Blessed Hammer), Protection paladins can have a better overall experience.
